There are many options out there for securing your home. One of the most effective home security tools is a video surveillance system, however wall mounted surveillance cameras are easily spotted and can be avoided. An alternative is a hidden camera with a built-in DVR. These hidden cameras are board cameras mounted in everyday household items such as alarm clocks, wall clocks, or smoke detectors. These cameras are fully self contained with no wires or receivers to install, simply point the camera in the direction you wish to record and press the record button on the remote control. The DVR hidden camera comes with a 8 GB SD card to store the recorded footage, this footage can then be downloaded to any PC via an SD card reader for viewing.

These cameras are used to monitor your home while you are away, whether to catch a burglar, a cheating spouse, or an abusive nanny or baby sitter. For business owners, a DVR hidden camera can be useful in loss prevention by watching for employee or customer theft and to monitor the office or store after closing. For outdoor surveillance, the motion activated Spotlight hidden camera or the Electrical Box hidden camera can help protect your home or business from vandalism or trespassing.

At a price of around $500, these hidden cameras provide an easy to install, affordable security solution for your home or business. A DVR Hidden Camera can give you piece of mind by watching over your home or business when you can’t be there.

We live in a dangerous world today, especially for women. Always be prepared for the unexpected when leaving your house. Lipstick Pepper Spray is small and compact and can even be carried in your hand when you are in a potentially dangerous situation such as a dark parking lot looking for your car.

Lipstick Pepper Spray is a good deterrent to show your date that your 'no' means 'NO!'.

Lipstick Pepper Spray is actually a chameleon. Most women carry lipstick in their purse so it's no surprise when a man sees her take it out to use it. Little does he know that she is now armed with a self protection device that will stop him in his tracks if he decides to 'go too far'.

It looks exactly a tube of lipstick but inside it contains 5 one-second bursts of pepper spray that will cause immediate copious tearing of the eyes as well as uncontrollable coughing, which will incapacitate any guy who won't back off when you tell him to.

Aim the Lipstick Pepper Spray for your attacker's eyes - a little bit goes a long way but why not squirt him twice for a longer lasting effect. After all, he asked for it by not obeying your warnings.

This self protection device also comes in handy if you're in your parked car and someone comes up and tries to assault you - just reach into your purse and squirt, squirt - you'll leave him coughing and gagging on the street. Then, get the heck out of there and call 911 so that the police can take care of the situation.

Don't try to get involved - the spray has already done the job on the creep but he is still capable of punching or grabbing you if you're close enough. Just get out of his reach and out of there as quickly as you can.

Never leave home without a Lipstick Pepper Spray in your purse or pocket. Even if you are not out on a date you are still susceptible to attacks even while walking to your car, or, if you are a college coed, walking to the library or the dorm.

Don't be the next crime statistic. Be prepared for the unexpected with Lipstick Pepper Spray - it could save your life someday!

For more information about Lipstick Pepper Spray as well as other women's self defense and self protection products that will keep you safe and secure from the bad guys, please visit our website: http://www.feelsafeandsecure.com/women_self_defense.html and Don't Be the Next Victim!

By the way, Pepper Spray also comes in a heart-shaped perfume container the size of a lipstick tube. Additional information on this self protection device can be found at the women's self defense website mentioned above.

Larry Zolna is an author of numerous articles regarding Home Security Products, Self Defense Products and Wireless Hidden Cameras.
What is self defense? Really, what is it? A lot of people have various opinions on this subject and depending on who you talk to their opinions range from casual to extreme. Often with most things in life you have to throw out the effortless and the complicated to find the answer somewhere in the middle. Occam's razor put simple states all things being created equal the simplest answer is better. Therefore if we take that approach to this question; what is self defense, what is the answer?

The answer for each person is going to be different; life experiences dictate this. There is no one answer that is completely correct. Depending on what you have been through in your life whether they are complicated situations at best to the most atrocious acts against you will cause your opinion to vary greatly. They person who grew up in a great area and was protected from the outside violent world won't see self defense is the same light as someone who grew up within a hard environment without a lot of guidance. If you read James Mitoses' book on what is self defense you will find an incredible well thought out heavily disciplined look at it from an old world Chinese and Japanese structure with principles of keeping face, strict rules, and laws. That certainly is one form; but what I'm looking for is what a well rounded in between answer that fits what self defense really is; cause after all a relatively simple answer is optimal.

The legal term for self defense is important to give respect to the law and to us to make sure we are on the correct side of it. Legal: "To be acquitted of any kind of physical harm-related crime (such as assault and battery and homicide) using the self-defense justification, one must prove legal provocation, meaning that one must prove that they were in a position where not using self-defense would most likely lead to significant injury to life, limb, or property." Ok, that leaves things pretty wide open for interpretation by a jury, the courts, lawyers; let's try to keep away from those situations.

I've researched and read many books and talked to many well accomplished self defense instructors before I came to my conclusion on what is self defense. I believe the answer is as easy as this; the ability to protect you, your loved ones, and family against any force that wants to cause you harm using equal force.

Adam Sisterhen is the president of Your Personal Security Store and author of personal security and self defense articles. He is a proud advocate and a firm believer in personal security and self defense products that help protect you, your family and your loved ones.

To find the products talked about in this article and a wealth of information check these links below.

For the quality personal security and self defense products visit [http://www.s90x.com]

For insights into products and personal security and self defense visit http://www.yourpersonalsecuritystore.blogspot.com

Regards, Adam Sisterhen

I wanted to tell you about a crime that took place in my life. My vehicle was broken into over night as it was sitting in my driveway with security lights lighting the area, not motion lights just dusk to dawn lights. I think I'm going to make a few changes there. I live with my family in a good neighborhood that doesn't really have any kind of crime. The thief damaged my door lock braking in and stole misc change, flash lights, and my day timer which carried my checkbook and misc personal information as well as the usual schedule for the weeks and months ahead. The reason I'm telling you this is because of my incompetence.

If you live in a good area that doesn't mean that you won't fall victim to atrocities, it just means you are less likely to have them take place. Being vigilant is always the best way to stop or prevent unwanted atrocities taking place to you or your family. The crime could have been a great deal worse than it was; it also could have been a lot less. What things do you think could have been done to help avoid this from happening? There are many things I could have implemented; a car alarm, motion lights, a driveway alarm etc. The list could go on and on.

The one and most important thing I didn't do that wouldn't have stopped this from happening but would have made the event a lot less troublesome is very simply, taking things of value out of the vehicle. If I would have brought my day timer inside with me the major loss would have been avoided. The other misc items don't wreak havoc with my life like the loss of my check book and personal information that was stolen. Sure that doesn't make the fact that I was victim change or ease my mind, but it defiantly changes the criminal's next move. The criminal wouldn't have possible information to steal my identity or worse. Prevention is always best; however taking the proper steps can defiantly increase your chances of not being a victim.

Being vigilant of your surroundings and carrying the proper personal security or self defense product can stop or lessen the extent of any atrocity that you might encounter. For instance walking from your place of business to your car alone could be an enormous mistake. If you have someone walk with you it decreases your likeliness of being a victim. If that isn't an option, from the moment you leave the building have your key chain pepper spray, Taser, personal alarm, or stun gun in your hand ready to use; look around for anything unusual or out of place. Perhaps a person or persons that usually are not there or acting suspiciously, a car parked improperly. Listen to sounds around you like footsteps people whispering etc.

Conclusion:

By having you personal security and self defense product ready if some was to approach you, you will already have the upper hand in the situation, by being vigilant of your surroundings you can see or hear persons on the prowl. Being Vigilant is the best way to assure your safety. Remember the best time to learn your lesson about personal security and self defense is before something happens.

Adam Sisterhen is the president of Your Personal Security Store and author of personal security and self defense articles.
Are you prepared to defend yourself?

Firstly you must be fully prepared to defend yourself. Not half hearted you must be prepared to commit. As a woman you have a right to self defense. Yes of course there are times when it is best to just hand over your purse or even your car and walk away.

But...there are times when you either fight back or risk serious injury or death. What if I fight back and the attack is worse? Yes this is possible, but that kind of person was only interested in exerting power over and violence anyway.

Where self defense starts.

1.The first moment you feel threatened, you use your first two weapons.1.Your voice. Yell, scream, shout at your attacker, warn them to start away. Shout FIRE, not help. In this day and age many people are afraid to respond to a call of help. But, FIRE gets everyone's attention.

2.Your distance. Create mental boundaries, perhaps 5 yards/metres, become aware, 3 yards/metres face the person, if they are coming at you, shout, yell scream.

How to use a weapon

If you watch movies, often the person using a weapon extends it towards the attacker. Unfortunately an aggressive person will laugh at this weak show of defense. They will easily step forward and take the weapon and perhaps use it against their victim.

If your weapon is your car keys. Hold them in your right hand, with a key protruding. Keep this hand buy your side or hidden against your stomach or chest. Slightly extend your left hand in a stop position towards the attacker's chest. This means your left foot would be slight forward to create balance. Simply reverse if you are left handed.

This obviously sounds barbaric to a peaceful person. Firstly you are unlikely to cause serious injury and secondly you are acting in defense of your life.

The moment of attack.

At this moment you are shouting, As your attacker lunges at you they will try to grab your extended hand. At this point you withdraw left quickly and attack strongly with your right weapon. Next quickly kick the shin or stomp the foot, with lots of power.

PS If the weapon hand is stopped then you can use the balance of the person, while their hands are engaged with yours to attack their shins and feet. The moment they release you then use your weapon hand or free hand to attack.

A Good Example.

You have to move quickly and with force. But...you do not need to be strong. In Australia two strong young men broke into a residence. The owner responded to a noise and was confronted by these two men. One grabbed her by the throat, she responded by grabbing him by the ears and kneeing him in the groin. She called for help and some neighbours came to the rescue. Both men were arrested and charged.

What was special about this lady? Well she was an Olympic swimming champion, which is why this attack attracted so much media attention. But...what was most interesting is that she is 77 years old!

She wasn't strong, she wasn't young and fit, but she was able to take immediate action.

If you have a weapon such as keys or a pen, do not wave it in a threatening manner. As in the first instance it will be easily be taken away from you. Remember to keep it close and out of site. You need the element of surprise in your self defense.

A few common items you may have with you when out and about.

Key or keys, pen, lipstick tube, mobile phone, compact umbrella, hard glasses case, eye brow, or eye liner pencil, nail clippers,. These articles are not legally perceived as a weapon, as would be scissors' or a pocket knife. And of course you can travel by air with most regular items.

It is important to practice your response moves. It is best to use a partner who is taller and heavier than you. They may need to wear protective eye wear. Because you will be reluctant to use force on your friend, it is useful to practice forcefully responding against a cushion against a wall.

Practice your shin kicks and foot stomps again on a solid spongy item on the floor or leaning against the wall. You can buy high density foam and wrap it around a solid item.

For more specific information on woman's self defense go to http://www.livingwellpublications.com/self-improvement/womens-self-defense/

From sleep problems, to diet, to snoring to womens and babies health plus many fun and interesting topics. go to http://livingwellpublications.com/blog/

Much crime takes place in and around cars. And, too often, women are targets. By taking these commonsense precautions you can avoid most unpleasant situations before they occur. And no black belt in martial arts is needed.

Here are some actions you can take:

Keep you car well maintained. Anything that immobilizes you makes you a sitting duck for predators. So keep your car well maintained, make certain your tires are in good shape and don't let the gas tank sink down to the "E."

Keep your guard up in parking lots of malls and shopping centers. These places are targets for car thieves and other predators.

Keep your car keys in your hands as you approach your car, especially in large shopping center lots. A woman fiddling for her keys is a good target.

Keep your eyes and ears open when you approach your car. Take a look around you. Is anyone following? Silently note the appearance of the people and your environment. Is anyone lurking near your car? Be especially wary when you are loading or unloading bags or large items.

Take a look inside the passenger compartment before getting into your car. True tale: a Long Island woman unknowingly drive home from the shopping mall with an intruder crouched in her back seat. Take a look underneath the car while you're at it, too.

Be cautious when approaching your car if it is parked next to a large SUV or other vehicle in a parking lot. Large vehicles block the view of onlookers and conceal predators.

Lock your car. Lock your car from the inside as soon as you enter and lock it from the outside when you leave. Many a car has been stolen because it was left unlocked. But more important, you prevent an unwanted person from having access to you when you are sitting inside a locked car.

Park in a well lit area when possible. Predators like to hide in the shadows.

Keep your windows closed especially when driving on residential and commercial streets. Predators have been known to force their way in through car windows of drivers stopped at intersections.

For that reason, don't sit your handbag on the passenger seat next to you when driving. Your handbag is an enticing target for thieves who will snatch and grab--or break a window.

Don't leave valuables in plain sight when you leave your car. If you use a window mounted GPS, be sure to take it with you and wipe off the tell-tale suction marks on your windshield when you leave your car.

If you plan to valet park your car, keep your car keys separate from other keys and only give the valet the key necessary to start your car.

If you see someone or something that makes you feel uncomfortable, trust your instincts, move away from the threat (such as to the other side of the vehicle), or call for help.

Would you like to learn other easy-to-use and effective women's self defense strategies?
As unfortunate as it is, we live in a world where women need to worry about their safety in both their public and private lives. Sexual assault statistics are as high as ever, indicating that women from all socio-economic backgrounds are being attacked on the street and in their homes. This has led many women to look for a program to teach them to defend themselves. But which self defense for women classes are the right ones to attend?

For some women, martial arts schools are very accessible, as they are prolific around the United States and are especially popular in suburban areas. However, traditional and franchise martial arts programs are not designed for self defense, especially women's self defense. Although programs such as Tae Kwon Do and freestyle Karate are great sports and can be great exercise, their application to real life is minimal. Look for a program that is specifically designed for self-defense and for women.

When looking for a women's self defense program, it is important to choose a program that spends time talking about prevention of physical confrontations. The best self-defense technique is to never have a situation escalate to physical contact; but you need to know what to look for and how to react.

A good women's self defense program will include techniques while you are standing and while you are on the ground. Many programs put heavy emphasis on striking while you are on your feet, but the reality of most fights and defense scenarios is that they end up on the ground. Being able to move yourself and properly contact your opponent on the ground is a skill, not something that is instinctual. Keywords to look for are "grappling", "ground fighting" or "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu" when shopping for a program.

Having at least one woman instructor in the program is beneficial. Many men do not realize how big they are or how much stronger their upper body is than a woman's and, therefore, teach techniques that are not the most effective ones for a woman to perform. If you have a woman instructor, they are more likely to teach you the techniques that work for them, for their strength and size.

Lastly, a good women's self defense program designates a lot of time to repetition and is spread out over a decent amount of time, such as a six-week program. A one-time, two-hour seminar is not enough time or repetition to really ingrain the techniques into your body and mind, especially if you have never done martial arts before.

It is so important for women to learn to defend themselves and feel confident in their level of safety. Do your research, grab a friend, and get started!

Alexandra Rathbone is a life-long and nationally recognized martial artist. She is the founder of Mighty Maiden Women's Self Defense, a business dedicated to designing effective self-defense training programs for women in Appleton, Wisconsin and the northeastern Wisconsin area.
The best way to protect yourself is to avoid a fight altogether, but what happens when you are forced into a fight? You may need to protect yourself through the use of force. Keep in mind that the ultimate goal is not to beat up your assailant, but to escape from them. These are 10 great methods for striking your assailant in a way that will disable them long enough for you to escape, with or without a weapon, so that your attempts at self defense will be successful.

Stomp on their foot! This particular technique is often available when many of the others are not. The downside is that it's not nearly as effective as many of the others, but stomping on their foot can give you the opportunity to use a more effective technique so that you can safely run away.

Kick their knees! Like most of these techniques, this will hurt! But more than that, it will make it harder for them to chase you when you run away. It's generally hard to see this attack coming, making it quite effective.

Box their ears! By cupping your hand slightly and smacking their ear (or ears), you can cause what is essentially a VERY loud noise VERY close to their ear. This can cause intense pain, and can even cause permanent damage if you manage to break their eardrum. Either way, intense pain in that particular area will disorient your attacker, giving you ample time to get away.

Hit their solar plexus! You might have no idea what a solar plexus is, but that's ok, I'm about to explain it. It's an area that's just a little bit above the stomach and directly below the rib cage. Follow the bottom edges of your rib cage until you get to the highest part. There should be a little bone sticking down right there. You can either hit that bone or hit just barely below it. There is a fairly large collection of nerves there that, when hit directly, can cause intense pain and create the same effect as "knocking the wind out of them", so they will have a hard time breathing. If you break that bone, it will be even more painful. This will likely stop any attacker in their tracks. The downside is that you have a fairly small area to hit, and it's an area that is easily guarded if the attacker sees you going for it.

Strike their groin! Yes, it's cliché. Yes, it's "cheap". Yes, it's very effective. A punch, a kick, or a weapon of some kind can all work well. It can even be effective against females, just not as effective. Keep in mind, though, that you may need to use more of an upward motion in your strike if your attacker is female. However, it is true that, statistically speaking, more attackers are male than female, so it's relatively unlikely that you'll need to worry about that.

Hit them in the neck! Necks are very sensitive, especially the front of the neck. Striking someone there will cause them to feel like they are being choked for several seconds, along with the pain of being hit in general. Keep in mind, though, that if you hit TOO hard, you could crush their trachea and actually kill them. This is unlikely, though, because it really takes a lot of force to do that.

Gouge their eyes! This is one of the most effective methods for disorienting someone. By simply jabbing your finger(s) into their eye(s), you will cause a lot of pain, their eyes will tear up, they will be disoriented, and their vision will go blurry for several very valuable seconds, giving you time to run. This technique can also cause permanent damage depending on how hard you jab their eyes, how long your fingernails are, and exactly what part of the eye you hit.

Do a combo! It may sound silly when phrased like that, but doing two or three of these attacks in rapid succession can increase your chance of success and give you more time to escape. However, don't let it tempt you to stand there and wail on them. It's always better to do only what you need to do and then run.

Be careful with these self defense techniques, especially in the way that you practice them. Many of them can cause permanent damage, and a couple even have the potential to kill somebody, so don't just try them on your friends to see how well they work.

Try them on a non-living target if you feel the need to practice them, but otherwise, save them for an emergency!

For more information and tips about self defense, Total Home Security, Self-Defense is an excellent source.

Steve McDowell is a freelance writer who's curiosity about security technology had led him into in-depth research about a variety of security and safety related topics. By Adam Sisterhen

Watching the news lately has really reinforced what I have been saying with a sense of urgency; the need for personal security self defense products and self defense training. You can't be sure that some of the recent deaths could have been avoided; however it's possible they could have been avoided by carrying personal security self defense products and having self defense training. Being prepared can ward off a lot of tragic, terrible circumstances, and possible save your life. It gives you the element of surprise your attacker isn't ready for. They approach you thinking they have the upper hand until a shot of pepper spray hits them right in the face or a Taser renders their bodies useless or a palm heel strike to the face takes them back giving you the opportunity to flee. Every time I hear or read about such atrocities it makes my skin crawl.

The unfortunate part is that even though we have some of the finest trained police officers in the world they aren't always there in our time of need. I can't stress enough how important it is to carry personal security self defense equipment and have self defense training. I would strongly recommend practicing with your personal security self defense products so you are ready and able to handle your equipment. You need to take action now, so you don't wish you had purchased that for you, your spouse, or your children after the fact. By being prepared with the proper equipment and training can you put the odds on you or your loved one's side

In my opinion a Taser is the best product for personal security and self defense today; owning a Taser comes with responsibility and training. Pepper spray is the next best thing. Both can accomplish what you need; a chance to get away from your attacker.

Here are some reasons I believe Tasers are awesome personal security devices.

Neuromuscular Incapacitation: They actually disrupt your assailant's nervous system rendering them useless.

They are a non-lethal weapon that can be carried in most states. ("TASER devices are not considered firearms by the US Government. They can be legally carried (concealed or open) without permit required in 43 states. Prohibited citizen use in DC, HI, MA, MI, NJ, NY, RI, WI, certain cities and counties. CT and IL are legal with restrictions. Check local laws before purchasing or carrying electronic control devices." Courtesy of Taser International.)

They work from up to 15 feet away. Giving you a comfortable space between you and the attacker.

They can penetrate up to 2 inches of clothing. This makes it great for even cold climate areas.

A hit on any part of the body can be effective; which allows the stressed filled person to hit their target. Practice, practice, practice is still the best policy.

They are one of the most reliable forms of self defense equipment.

Anti-Felon identification makes the product great for keeping people from using them irresponsibly.

Here are some reasons why I believe Pepper Spray is a wonderful personal security device.

The effects; Pepper Spray causes the eyes to seal with tears, nose to run, excessive coughing, shortness of breath, and extreme burning sensations. Taking the fight right out of a person.

Pepper Spray doesn't just wipe off. In fact rubbing can intensify the burn.

Concealment; Pepper Sprays are available in many forms. From the key chain spray to pens, lip stick and even pagers. There is a Pepper Spray for every situation you may need it for. Home use, traveling, jogging, walking, work etc.

Light weight easy to carry.

Affordable. Pepper Spray definitely gives you the best results for the price.

Range; some spray's are good up to 25 feet.

Easy to use. There isn't a lot of training required. Again practice, practice, practice.

Each product has its own relevance to each situation you encounter. In my opinion both Pepper Spray and Tasers are great for helping you keep your distance and enable you to flee. Now all that being said there is no cure for every situation and there can be draw backs to these products i.e. pepper spray in extreme wind can cause blow back. In light of that being prepared and trained with the right products just might save your life. If you want to increase your odds of survival even farther take a self defense class.

Remember the best time to learn your lesson about personal security and self defense is before something happens! You, your loved ones and closest friends' deserve to be safe.

Adam Sisterhen is the president of Your Personal Security Store and author of personal security and self defense articles. He is a proud advocate and a firm believer in personal security and self defense products that help protect you, your family and your loved ones.

To find the products talked about in this article and a wealth of information check these links below.

For quality personal security and self defense products visit [http://www.yourpersonalsecuritystore.com/taser]®

For insights into products and personal security and self defense visit http://www.yourpersonalsecuritystore.blogspot.com

Regards, Adam Sisterhen

Lets have a look at some of the basic rules of self-defense for woman. You as woman has a sixth sense, you should use it and trust your sixth sense. In case you find yourself in any situation that for some reason makes you feel uncomfortable, unsafe of threatened in any way, do not ignore your feelings, trust yourself and your emotion and act on it immediately. Do not hesitate, get out of the situation as quickly as you can.

All woman, including you and me, we all have the ability to turn any crisis into an opportunity for us. Lets look at one example of such a crisis that we can change and use as an opportunity, lets say you wake up with a naked man next to your bed, the crisis is he is in your room naked, but the opportunity is that he has an open very vulnerable target are exposed for you to use. One hard blow or strike to his groin could stop an attack entire, or give yourself enough time to get well away. Most of us do not realize that we are actually much much stronger than we think, you have power, use it.

Stay committed to your goal, and that is to stock an attack or get well away from your attacker. If your first plan does not work, try the next one, and then another one, until you are successful. Be serious and committed about wanting to stop the attack, and maintain a strong attitude throughout the fight.

In order for you to be successful at self-defense, you have to shift your mindset. It is very important to have a true and urgent desire to get out of your current threatening situation and you must have a willingness to do and try absolutely whatever it takes to succeed. You have to develop your mental strength, your emotional strength and your physical ability as well, but your attitude comes first of all, the actual self-defense comes second. Commit yourself to your goal, no matter what it takes, and maintain endurance the entire time, no matter how long it takes.

Your body is a walking weapon, and all your weapons you take with you where ever you go, to your work, where you go to play and even to bed with you. The attacker has sensitive body target areas as well, and he takes it with where he goes as well, and these areas when struck could stop and attack from becoming a rape or murder. How would you fight back and what areas would you use when such an attacker comes into your space, bringing his target areas within easy reach of your weapons. Use your fists or hand to strike his nose or groin, as hard as you can. Use your hands to strike or clap his ears. Your fingers you use to poke his eyes as deep and hard as you can. Stab him in the throat with all your force with one strong straight finger. Use your knee, foot or leg to force it into his groin as hard as you can. Use your leg to kick him, then when he folds, use your elbow to strike down on his spine or neck. Use your foot to stamp on his foot with all the force you can.

Then, don't ever feel sorry for him, or use less than all your strength and might on him, remember that if you don't hurt him, he is going to hurt you, and he might even go as far as to kill you. While each and every attack and attacker might vary, it is up to you the individual to decide whether a particular situation calls for physical self-defense, verbal defense or just withdrawal. Be strong, use your strength and your weapons and save yourself.

http://www.squidoo.com/powerofmysubconsciousmind

http://www.squidoo.com/healingpowerofmymind

There have been many court records stating cases of rape, harassment or physical attack. Most of these have women as their top victims, since men are believed to have the ability to defend themselves more. Yes, defend...

Women have been advised time and again to prepare themselves against aggressors that may attack them anytime possible. They are everywhere: the streets, the office, even at school. They may be people who are familiar or complete strangers. Most importantly their motives differ.

They may be rapists or just plain robbers. Either way, they represent "danger" to a streetwalker (especially female streetwalkers). They ambush with their schemes and at times the usual kick at the groin or poking the eyes are not enough lifesavers, unlike what was seen in movies. And though martial arts seemed like a cool way to get safety, there are other ways to do it - learning what self defense really means.

Self defense is all about using the head and not whatever physical attacks necessary to blow down an oppressor. They may work though but everything is not always about "the way of the fists". It's a known fact that thinking before acting brings out the best in everything we try to do.

Brains are the best weapon ever and a background check on self defense would prove this claim as only 10 percent of it pertains to physical counter-moves. The remaining 90 percent are all about keeping calm and being aware of one's surroundings to know how to prevent such ambushes from the suspected attacker. Know who he is and how to fight him before he even attacks is the first thing to do. If things did get aggressive, it's time to bring out those sharp ideas and strike back (get physical). Here's how to prevent an attack.

1. Keep calm and cool

An attacker would always look for easy targets. They would often look for women who are busy with their phones, have their hands full (like after going in the grocer) and seem fearful. Have a confident placing. In court records, cases have been posted where the victims are usually those who are unaware and are freaked out if they find someone following them. They usually end up in dark alleys where no one would be able to help them. Another fact is that attacking at once may only get the oppressor fired up that may lead the contact to be much worst.

Keeping the chin up and looking like the girl who's aware is a sure way to keeping the bad men away. These women have the tag "bring it on" posted on their foreheads.

2. They are not always at the dark

Keep in mind that attackers are not always those who creep out from the dark. They may be people whom we call associates. There is this one sure way to keep their secret evil motives from manifesting, and keep us miles away at once. This is called de-escalation.

De-escalation is speaking or acting in a way that may keep the worst from happening. Example of such is throwing the wallet when a robber attacks instead of fighting back. Sometimes this method is for keeping one's rage calmed down by agreeing with him or her: example is when harassed. These are ways to have their focus redirected thus keeping one away in a tight situation.

3. Learn safety measures

Know the streets traveled as much as possible. Go to places where there are many people. Keep out of those where being alone means trouble. Know hang-outs which are safe. Try to convince friends the joints which you believe are safe from possible attackers. Also have a buddy when walking at night.

Instant communication is also a must. Have the speed dial of your cell phones ready in case of emergency. More than that posts a written schedule of activities that they ought to know about. Be direct in saying where you'll be going, with whom, and the time to come home.

4. It's time to learn self-defense

Be more aware than ever. There are moves that attacker may find themselves surprised. These are moves which they least expect before giving the kick at the groin and poking the eyes. It's a great add to confidence if the techniques on fighting back can be learned.

There are times, however, that rather than hand to hand combat, lectures in self defense classes give attention to ingenuity. A pen may be used as a weapon as an umbrella. A simple kick may not be martial arts yet it may do wonders. Inhalers (for asthmatic) and spray perfumes may also serve as pepper sprays giving the target a chance to get away fast.

Remember, a good self defense class helps a person in sizing up the situation.

Anticipating an attacker means giving focus on learning from other's past experiences and taking in the present to know how to keep safe. Self defense is not about getting aggressive, it's about knowing how to keep one away from harm's way. So for women who are the usual targets of assaults, here's the best reminder to keep the attackers away: Think before you act.

Currently, Teresa Conrad works as a professional writer in many accounts like public records and court records.
The notion of self-defense conjures up pictures of Dirty Harry or Bruce Lee, but the truth is a lot more down-to-earth than that (which may help explain to some degree why such movies are so popular). Indeed, for most of human history, self-defense was just another fact of life, another chore in life, an everyday task. Speaking of movies, one of the most famous cut-scenes in all of cinematic history was in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, at the beginning of the film when a man-ape throws up into the air a bone he'd just used as a weapon, which bone then "becomes" a cylindrical spacecraft floating in space above earth - thus connecting war and technology, a proposition that's been made by many thinkers through the ages. So far from being some relic of uncivilized times, war and struggle is what first made civilization possible! As the ancient Greek historian Heraclitus remarked, war is the father of all things. Or as the Roman military writer Vegetius advised, si vis pacem para bellum - if you seek peace, prepare for war.

Self-defense should be assumed as a chose, then, or a duty - to or for oneself, to or for one's loved ones. It is too often either something scary or something fun, thus putting off the right crowd and bringing along the wrong one. But taken as just another task in life, it can be seen in the proper light and then pursued properly, which is to say seriously, with respect and with focus.

In today's modern environment, self-defense is a lot more complicated and also a lot simpler. Simpler because it doesn't have to involve the elimination of one's enemy, as in times past, with blood feuds that last several generations, but more complicated because it takes genuine skill to not fatally harm someone. Indeed, the true martial artist is one so masterful as to be able to finely tune his or her lethality. Such an ability is a whole skill-set in itself, requiring years of training at the least, never mind the innate aptitude and who knows what else!

A simpler way would be to employ weapons, specifically those which only disables one's assailant(s), and only temporarily so, with no permanent damage incurred. After all, it would be ridiculous to win on the streets but lose in the courts! So this rules out firearms right away, and even knives, both of which have great potential for inflicting fatal injury. Stun guns, then, appear to be the best choice, everything considered. They are basically non-lethal but definitely effective, capable of knocking someone out for up to a whole half hour at a time, even the drug-fueled. That's a lot of time to get to safety or go for help. A pepper spray is a much cheaper alternative that's almost as effective. Both options are great where not proscribed by law.

Everyone wants to live in a neighborhood that has no crime. When you find one please let me know. I thought I lived in a low crime area until last week when 14 cars had their windows bashed in right down the street. No more street parking for me.

Unfortunately crime happens everywhere, even in gated communities. Recently here in Colorado Springs burglars got into a gated community and did a home invasion of a home. There are stories of other gated community crimes too.

Since crime happens everywhere you really can't avoid it. What you can do is better prepare yourself to avoid it and take action to learn how to defend yourself.

The best way in my opinion is to start with a basic self defense techniques course from world class instructors in the comfort of your own home on a DVD. To me this represents a good starting point and lays a foundation for you to build on.

It also is a good way for your family to learn along with you-maybe even build some bonding there. The family that learns together stays together or some such.

Then depending on your situation get some self defense products like personal alarms, pepper sprays, stun guns or maybe even a taser.

Personal alarms are great for kids even up to college age. Almost all have key ring attachments and flashlights. They are loud noise makers up to 130 db. The bad guys never want any unneeded attention that these alarms will bring.

Then consider a pepper spray. Pepper sprays are a great first line of defense in an assault situation. They can disable an attacker for up to 25-30 minutes by causing searing pain, tearing so bad the eyes will close, coughing and shortness of breathe. It is nasty stuff indeed. It is inexpensive and really works. Maybe that is why law enforcement officers all over the world carry and use it.

Another option is a stun gun. A stun gun is a hand-held, battery powered device that delivers an electric shock to an assailant. I always advise holding a charging stun gun up for the bad guys to seen.

The noise alone and flying sparks that stun guns show when activated can be enough to scare the bad guys away. Stun guns are easy to carry and hide, some as small as 3" tall, and easy to use. Most are in the $25-$60.00 price range.

And finally there are tasers. Tasers use electro-muscular disruption (EMD) technology which sends an 18-26 watt electrical signal that overrides the central nervous system that controls muscle function. They are pulses of energy so powerful no one has ever been able to overcome their effect.

It shoots out two darts attached to 15 feet of wire. 50,000 volts travel over the insulated wires.

Remember too that the purpose of self defense tools like this to give you time to seek safety, help or just get away from a dangerous situation. They all do that in spades.

Jack Krohn owns "Security Solutions" and is the author of over 400 articles on self defense and home security problems.

Save 10% by using discount code FTV at checkout.

Home of the Self Defense DVD

Get yourself a Hidden Spy Camera

Stun guns are widely regarded as one of the most effective self defense weapons there is.

They are basically simple hand held devices that have two or more prongs that have about an inch or more of separation.

When charged the electricity literally flies between the prongs creating a sight and sound that is pretty scary in its' own right not to mention the effects on an assailant. It will deplete blood sugars from the body equivalent to running a long 40 km race sapping energy levels to zero. The results: disorientation and loss of balance.

A stun device is considered a weapon so don't use it without thought or needlessly. Misuse can result in criminal charges being brought. Leave the "horsing around" stuff to the experts on You Tube.

There are six spots on the body possess nerve centers such as around the upper hip, below the rib cage or the upper shoulders on the right and left hand side of the body. These are the targets for maximum effectiveness. If an assailant is on drugs or drunk a stun gun may not work. Stun guns are 86% effective on average. They don't rely on pain for results.

If you are looking for a cool self defense product in the form of a hot stun gun-this is it! Close to a million volts in a package the size of an average blackberry (3") which makes it so small that it is easily concealed in your hand. Or if you can carry it on your belt like a pager it is that small.

Jack Krohn is the author of over 400 articles on self defense and home security.

Hot Shot Stun Gun

Hidden Spy Camera

If you're thinking about getting a self defense product, you might want to buy a personal alarm. It's not your usual self defense weapon. It won't immobilize an attacker but it can be very effective in stopping an attack by scaring off the attacker.

A personal alarm emits a loud sound when you push the button or pull the pin out of the device. The sound can be as loud as 130 decibels. This is loud enough to scare off a potential attacker. The device can come in several sizes and shapes. You can carry it in your pocket, in your purse or you can buy one that goes on your keychain.

Since attackers like to sneak up on their victims, the loud alarm will surprise them. The sound is also loud enough that other people that might be in the area will hear it too. Attackers won't like this and usually they'll run away before help comes.

Of course, there is no guarantee that the personal alarm will help stop an attack. It will probably work in most cases, but you might want an extra layer of protection just to be on the safe side. That's why it's a good idea to carry pepper spray or some other self defense weapon along with the alarm.

One good reason to invest in a personal safety alarm is because some countries and states have strict laws regarding self defense weapons. Some states in the United States prohibit the use of stun guns, tasers and even certain types of pepper spray. I think it's ridiculous to have prohibitions on pepper spray, but if you live in a county or state that doesn't allow you to have it, then getting a personal alarm is probably your best option.

If you're lucky enough to live in a city and state where you can carry pepper spray or a stun gun, then you should consider investing in one of these products to go along with the alarm.

Michelle Roebuck runs the Your Personal and Home Security website - where you can find more information on Basic Self Defense.
