Chemical Sprays For Self Defense

Chemical Sprays For Self Defense By Stephen G. Virnich

One of the best and most popular methods of non-lethal products for self defense is the use of defense sprays. These include CS and CN Tear gas, and OC also know as Pepper Spray. These are economical, safe, and effective choices for personal protection and have been used for decades.

CS and CN tear gas sprays used to be the most popular sprays for civilian use. Generally CS was available for civilians while law enforcement used CN. Contrary to much mis-information on the internet these days, CN was the one used by law enforcement because it worked much faster than CS when employed in aerosol sprays. CS required a more direct hit in the eyes, and took up to 30 seconds to take effect, while CN worked in 2-5 seconds and was effective hitting the assailant anywhere from the chin on up, even from the chest up, due to quick evaporation. Of the two, once the CS took effect, it was much stronger and took longer for recovery.

Later on, law enforcement switched to pepper spray also known as OC (oleo-resin capsicum). OC had been around for a long time usually advertised in women's magazines or for use by the postman for dogs. However the potency of those sprays was generally around .35 percent up to 1 percent, much weaker than the OC of today.

The reason for the switch is that law enforcement often have to deal with people under the influence of alcohol and drugs, or in a mental state where they are impervious to pain. Tear gasses are irritants and work using pain for compliance. OC on the other hand is an inflammatory agent that while causing much pain, works whether the target feels pain or not. This is because being an inflammatory agent, it causes the eyes to shut on impact, the capillaries of the eyes swell, causing temporary blindness, so even if the subject gets an eye open they can't see. If it gets in the respiratory tract it shuts down all but life support breathing, and leaves the subject coughing and choking. Thirdly, it also causes confusion and panic and extreme burning sensation to the skin and mucous membranes. With a direct hit OC will work almost instantly.

Even with all the powerful effects of pepper spray, it is non-lethal, and it's effects wear off within 45 minutes.

WHICH BRAND TO BUY?

Which brand to buy can be confusing for the average person. 'There are many brands to choose from, some of lesser quality, and some good ones. What you want is a brand that will stop an attacker from further aggression, giving you a chance to get away safely. Police officers use OC to subdue and restrain and have the benefit of back-up and deadly force if need be. Consequently police often use sprays that are not as powerful, as they also have to clean up a suspect when getting him to jail. Civilians do not have the luxury of back up, or deadly force most of the time, and do not have to clean up their attacker, so what you want is the most powerful and nasty spray you can use.

OC sprays range from 1% up to 17% concentration of pepper, and are rated in Scoville heat units, or SHU'S which are how hot peppers even in foods are rated. OC is generally made from cayenne and habenero peppers, from the placenta of the plant. Heat ratings range from 500,000 SHU's (Mace brand) up to 5.3 million SHU's.

What to look for is a brand that has a high percentage from 10% on up, along with a high heat rating, preferably 2,000,000 SHU's. This gives you a high percentage of a very hot spray, which means the out of the nozzle heat will be strong and give you stopping power.

I sell the Streetwise brand at 17% and 2,000,000 SHU's which will bring down even the most determined attacker. Some other great brands are Sabre Red at 10%, Spitfire at 10%, Bodyguard LE also at 10%. These high quality formulations are all 2,000,000 SHU's which makes them very effective. The chemical that makes OC hot is called capsaicin and the above sprays all have at least 1 % capsaicin content which make them very hot.

WHICH MODEL TO PURCHASE

Here again there are many to choose from. We will keep it simple in this article. The best type to carry for anyone who drives is a keychain unit. These are either units in a leatherette holster, or a hard molded holster both with a key ring to attach car keys. These are the best selling units because it is normal to have your car keys in hand when going to and from your car, and that is precisely where most attacks take place. Imagine trying to fumble in a purse to try to find your pepper spray when a big, bad guy is on the attack! When the OC is in hand, all you need do is point and shoot.

For in the car, or at home, or even a pocket, a 2 oz cannister is a good size to have. This size gives you more distance and gets a lot more spray on your attacker. It also will not run out as quickly as a key ring unit, which is generally a half ounce. These are the two most practical units for the average person. 3 and 4 ounce units are also good for car or home.

Pepper spray can be purchased in a cone spray, splatter stream, or foam. Each is effective and has it's strong points. Cone spray soaks the attacker's face and causes instant respiratory difficulties, blindness, and choking. However you have less range, and it can blow back in your face fairly easy with a breeze.

Splatter stream gives you much more distance but requires a little more accuracy and may have less effect on the respiratory tract, but also will not blow back so easy.

Foam expands up to 600% on the attacker's face, blocking vision and causing him to try to wipe it off and grinding into his own face. Foam does not have cross contamination, and does not blow back unless in a very strong wind. However, it has almost no respiratory effects, and unless you move away your attacker might try to throw some at you.

For most people I would recommend cone or splatter stream as they have the most effect on an attacker and give you some distance, especially splatter stream. There are also fog units that really blast a lot of spray and are good for several attackers but because of the volume that comes out they will not spray for long.

Hopefully this article will give you a basic knowledge of OC pepper spray and it's effectiveness. Nothing wraps you in armour, but OC can give you an edge and peace of mind.

Learn How to Refuse to Be a Victim by Using Self Defense Products

Learn How to Refuse to Be a Victim by Using Self Defense Products By Ken Potter

In today's world, it is important to learn how to refuse to be a victim by using self defense products. According to research and statistics by the Federal Bureau of Investigations, as of 2006 there is a murder committed every thirty one minutes, a forcible rape every six minutes and a robbery every one minute somewhere in the United States. This is alarming and should wake everyone up to the fact that no matter who you are or where you live it is necessary to protect yourself somehow.

There are many personal protection products that can help you if faced with an attacker. The best steps to take are to have a combination of items to ensure your personal safety. This way you are prepared no matter what. Having an electronic pocket whistle or personal alarm will bring attention to the situation if you are being threatened. This will often cause a potential attacker to flee the scene rather than continue an attack. It will also alert others that you are in need of assistance. People who sound an alarm receive fewer injuries, are found quicker and emergency personnel are able to assist them in a more timely manner.

A personal alarm or whistle is the first line of defense. They are beneficial because you do not need to blow into it with your mouth, which may be near impossible when under attack. You simply need to press a button and a loud sound will be emitted. They are often small enough to fit on a key chain or belt loop, which means they are accessible when needed. You can also get larger alarms that also include a flashlight and can double as a doorjamb when at home. These multipurpose alarms are excellent gifts for those loved ones who live alone, must walk alone to and from work or school or anyone that you want to feel safer in their lives.

Another wise investment when putting together a personal protection kit is to have pepper spray. This is a non-lethal way to stop any attacker. Pepper spray will cause your attacker to immediately and involuntarily close their eyes, have a burning sensation in the eyes and on skin, and have temporary blindness, which will allow you the time needed to get away. Some sprays also have dye so that the perpetrator can easily be identified even if they are able to flee the scene before police arrive. It is available in different sizes and shapes to suit anyone's needs. Containers as small as a ring or lip stick tube, keychain or canisters that attach to your belt, purse strap or easily fit into a handbag or back pack.

TASER guns and stun guns are becoming increasingly popular items to include in personal protection kits because they give the potential victim control over the situation and a non-lethal way to fight back. Each allowing you to debilitate an attacker by an electrical charge surging through their body, allowing you time to escape and find help.

One of the greatest things you can give yourself and your family is peace of mind and safety. Preparing for an emergency or an attack before you are faced with one can be the difference between life and death, between being a victim and refusing to be one. Having self defense products and knowing how to use them can help you ensure that you are not a victim.

Make sure to pick up your pepper spray and self defense products today.

Simple Facts About Pepper Spray (And How it Could Save Your Life!)

Simple Facts About Pepper Spray (And How it Could Save Your Life!) By David Parietti

Out of all the non-lethal personal-protection products, pepper spray is the most affordable and one of the easiest to conceal. Law enforcement has been using pepper spray since the late 1980's. In addition, letter carriers for the United States Postal Office carry defense sprays to repel dog attacks.

When attacked, it is imperative that the defense spray be directed at the assailant's face. This will have four primary affects on him.

First, their eyes will be forced shut, with the spray's chemical reaction inducing temporary blindness by dilating the eye capillaries. Imagine the stinging sensation of shampoo in your eye, but magnify it by one-hundred. The attacker's eyes will remain bloodshot for nearly an hour afterwards.

Secondly, the attacker's respiratory system will experience sudden inflammation. Their mucous membranes will swell giving them no additional air, save for live support. Their throat will partially close, blocking the airway to a degree. This loss of air will incapacitate them and they will not be able to continue any attack or strenuous physical action. This can last up to forty-five minutes, along with extreme bouts of coughing, gagging, and gasping for air.

Any of the attacker's skin that has made contact with the pepper spray will instantly become irritated and inflamed, in addition to them feeling that their skin is burning.

Physical and muscle coordination for the assailant will also become impaired, due to their abrupt loss of vision. This will give you the chance to run away and contact the authorities. Never hang around for a second longer than you need to!

In approximately forty-five minutes, the affects of the pepper spray will wear off the attacker, but he still won't get off scott-free. Most pepper sprays today contain an identifying vegetable dye that will remain on the assailant's skin for at least a week.

Many people confuse pepper spray with mace and tear gas. First off, Mace is a brand name and technically classified as a form of tear gas. Mace may not bring down an attacker who has a lower pain tolerance, altered by drugs and alcohol. The affects of pepper spray are instantaneous to anyone no matter what their condition. The affects of Mace are not.

If your assailant is in an extreme fit of rage, on a drug like PCP, or has reached the point of insanity, and has basically entered any other such condition where pain can no longer be felt or is dulled - tear gas and Mace is not guaranteed to stop them. Pepper spray will. The affects of pepper spray are longer lasting to the attacker and the identifying vegetable dye will remain on him for some time.

Currently, most pepper sprays have an expiration date somewhere on the canister. The spray itself won't evaporate and will last indefinitely, however, after some time it will begin to become less potent. In time the aerosol may also leak as well, affecting the spray range. The rule of thumb is that you should not keep your pepper spray for longer than two years, at most. It is far better to buy a replacement and have the peace-of-mind that your pepper spray is as potent as can be, than risk being at a disadvantage later on.

It is crucial that you test the pepper spray and become familiar with using it. To do so, you should go outside to a safe place and, with after determining which way the wind is blowing (you certainly don't want to be on the receiving end of the spray yourself) and spray for about half-a-second. This should be done once the product is purchased and once every three months thereafter. Also, practice with turning the safety release, so your motion is slick and fluid, should you be thrust into a dangerous, life-threatening situation.

Not only is it imperative that you familiarize yourself with the act of using the pepper spray, but it is equally important to mentally run through a potential situation in which you may need to use the pepper spray. Your mindset at the moment of attack is the first and greatest line of defense you will have against an assailant!

You should always carry your pepper spray on you, whether it's night or day. A common misconception is that criminals only work the nightshift and lunge from the shadows. This is not true; as much crime, if not more, happens in the day. You never know when an assailant will attack; therefore you should never risk not having your pepper spray on you. It's an old saying, but its true: 'better to be safe than to be sorry'. Don't risk it!

Never show anyone that you have the pepper spray until you're going to use it and the assailant has no chance to react. Never warn the assailant that you have pepper spray, or threaten that you will spray him. Like poker, never show you hand until the last moment. A one second burst will be enough to bring down even the largest, most imposing criminal - so long as the burst hits his face! The range of a ½ oz canister will reach 6-8 feet while a 2 oz canister will range between 10-15 feet. Keep in mind that most attacks are up-close and personal, which usually means the assailant will be 2-3 feet away from you at the moment of attack.

How to Stay Safe and Options to Protect Yourself

By Mark I Nicholson

Here, in order of cost (from free on up), are some tips and suggestions for personal protection and self defense techniques.

1. Stay alert and notice your environment. Always! You don't have to buy anything in order to do this, so there's no excuse not to pay attention to your surroundings. Walk with confidence and strength, which both tell a would-be mugger that you're NOT an easy target. Even in the wild, animals stalk the weakest and slowest of the heard. Carrying yourself with a strong purpose can be your first step in avoiding a confrontation.

2. Listen to your gut / instincts / 6th sense. Too many people say they "had a bad feeling" before being mugged or held up. If you feel like something is wrong, then do something about it! Don't walk out to your car if its pitch black and you have an awkward feeling. Ask for help or call someone and let them know your location, the situation, and then figure out a better course of action.

3. Since you've read number 1, and you're already aware of the situation, then it's time to do something about it. If you notice something strange or out of place (someone walking directly towards you and there's nobody else around OR a team of two staged next to your vehicle), run or try to get to safety. Again, call for help and remove yourself from harms way.

4. If you simply can NOT remove yourself from the situation, then you might be faced with a close confrontation. This is where self defense products can help. You've already done everything you can to avoid the situation, but you can't get away and the potential threat is enclosing on your space.

Note: If the assailant is armed with a gun, then its likely best to comply with their requests and try to remove yourself from the situation as fast as possible (give them your money, keys, or whatever it is they want) and get out of there!

5. At this point you should be preparing yourself for defense.
Note: You'll have to choose your item of self defense based upon what you feel comfortable with combined with your budget.

The most economical option is generally mace or pepper spray. Simply having this ready in hand might change an attackers mind. If not, the idea would be to use it and run.

Pros: easy to carry, inexpensive, if sprayed in the eyes can temporarily blind an attacker and allow you to get away
Cons: while some have a 3-6 feet range, strong winds can quickly alter the effectiveness of this product if your not close enough to the attacker

Some people ask what kind or type of pepper spray? They all work. Most importantly get one that you'll carry with you and can have available when needed. Consider one to carry (a keychain style) and one for your vehicle and/or home.

6. Stun guns would be the next price level of protection, and offer the ability to electrically "stun" an attacker, although direct contact is needed in order to use such a device.

Pros: easy to use and carry, intimidating when tested in front of someone (the electrical flash is loud and bright, similar to lightning), can disable a person long enough for you to get away
Cons: must be used in direct contact (you must touch the prongs to an attacker), battery powered means you will need to recharge or replace batteries at some point

7. The best form of protection we can recommend is the TASER, since it can be used at a distance (or in direct contact) and it immobilizes the attacker. It actually shoots out two electrical probes that are attached to wires which then deliver an electrical pulse. Police units have also started adopting these as an alternate non-lethal form of defense.

Pros: keeps you at a safe distance from the attacker, not largely effected by the wind, small and effective, can still be used as a stun gun on a second attacker or if you miss your primary target
Cons: cost, you might miss your target (backup requires contacting the person)

Remember: stay alert, remove yourself from the threat, and if you can't run to safety, then prepare your defenses!

Seven Surprising Facts About Pepper Spray

By Richard Armen

Pepper spray is an excellent choice for self defense, no matter who you are. It is inexpensive, effective, and legal to carry. Though it's an easy to use product, there are some interesting facts that you may not know about the spray you're carrying. Here are a few surprising facts:

The inspiration for pepper spray dates back thousands of years. Though in its current form is certainly a modern invention, in ancient times, bags filled with pepper and spices were commonly thrown at enemies, especially in Asia. In fact, throwing ground peppers in the face of criminals was a common practice in ancient Japan, where the practice was actually used as a form of punishment.

Pepper spray can be used against animals, too. It can be used against bears, mountain lions, dogs, and nearly any other animal that may be attacking you. In fact, all U.S. Postal Service carriers have spray to use as protection against dog attacks. This versatile spray is useful against both human and animal attacks.

It is a lot hotter than peppers. The hotness of both rated in SHUs, or Scoville Heat Units. The typical bell pepper rates close to zero on this scale. A jalapeno pepper is about 5000 SHU, and a habanero about 300,000. Typical sprays rate at about 2 million SHU, and some even approach 3 million SHU. In other words, they pack quite a powerful punch, incomparable to peppers in their natural form, when it comes to their burning effect.

The effects last nearly half an hour. If you've never seen anyone get sprayed in the face with it, you'll be surprised at how fast they go down and how long they stay down. The effects are nearly immediate, and a good blast will immobilize anyone for about 15 to 30 minutes.

Pepper spray can be disguised. If you don't like the idea of carrying a spray canister everywhere with you, why not pick a spray pen instead? The canisters come disguised as almost anything, including a pen or cell phone, to make you more comfortable carrying them.

Pepper spray can help catch the perpetrator. It isn't just for scaring criminals away or making them stop their attack. Today, many sprays include invisible UV dye. Your attacker won't know he's marked until he's caught and the police put him under a blacklight. Then, the effects of the dye will become readily apparent. This is a very useful tool in making a positive identification.

Pepper spray is not tear gas. They often get grouped together, but they're not the same thing. Although early forms of pepper spray, particularly the Mace brand name, did contain the same chemicals as tear gas, today they are completely different products formulated for different uses. Tear gas is formulated for crowd-control type uses, while pepper spray is designed to be effective against one person or a small group.

To make sure that you are prepared for any eventuality why not check out Resist Attack we have a fantastic selection of Pepper Spray , we're sure you won't be disappointed.

Personal Security Products - Keeping You Safe One Pepper Spray at a Time

By Jack Krohn

The recent spike of assaults on the citizens of Colorado Springs draws attention to the fact that personal security products can go a long way to protecting our men, women and even kids in this great town. No less than the Colorado Springs Police Department recommended that course of action yesterday.

And this recent spike in crime here in my back yard is being replicated all across the country. Many blame it on the economy, some blame it on gangs. Actually it doesn't matter-it is happening and affects us all especially women.

Women are unfortunately the victims of 90% of all assault cases from date rape in college to street assaults to domestic violence-mostly women-just a fact! Personal security products like stun guns, personal alarms, pepper sprays and even tasers are easy to use, effective and generally inexpensive.

They can help keep you safe in an assault, date rape, robbery, home invasion, domestic violence, carjacking or any situation where you are in danger.

Law enforcement officers carry handguns for the lethal choice but almost all carry tasers now for the non lethal alternative. They also carry pepper sprays as well as batons. That is a testament to how well these personal security products work.

Maybe the recent crime spike is a glitch in the scheme of things. Maybe not! It just seems that for as little as $10-15 a 10% OC pepper spray or a 130 db alarm is a good insurance policy to have. Maybe you will never need it-I hope so!

In case you do it is nice to have. Make sure if you get one you know how to use it and practice using it especially stun guns and pepper sprays. Make personal security products your first line of defense in an assault situation.

A stun gun will give you 5-10 minutes to get away by disabling an assailant. A pepper spray can give you as much as 20-30 minutes to get away.

A Portable Self Defense Weapon in Your Ninja Keychain

By Steve Thibeault

A ninja kubotan is a metal stick that has spikes for your fingers to grip. There are models that have keychains for them so that you can keep the weapon with you at all times.

Self defense is now top priority for many different people. After all, the current job market has changed drastically from the nine to five routines of yesterday. People are now being outsourced all over the world, and they have to work during different times of the day, sometimes waking up at midnight to work until the early hours of the morning. Many companies are wary of theft and have a midnight or graveyard shift of both workers and security officers. The world that leads from one's home to one's workplace is peopled with both the good and the evil of the planet, and you need to keep yourself from the latter kind.

One such weapon to consider is the ninja keychain kubotan. A ninja keychain is actually a modified kubotan: this kubotan would have spikes that protrude from the body of the kubotan, and these would stick out from between your fingers when you make a fist. Such a blow from this kubotan would be deadly: if you make a good punch, you could draw blood; and if you know how to use this kubotan, you could defend yourself quite well. This kind of kubotan is made of solid metal, and it will often be a little over five inches long. All points of the kubotan are made of metal, and it can therefore be used from any direction. You can even stick spikes inward to inflict damage using the metal stick!

Such a keychain can come in solid colors, such as black or silver. However, you still have to be careful about using the ninja keychain kubotan. For one, if you do not know how to handle it, you could end up injuring yourself. Those spikes are anything but safe for someone who doesn't know how to use the kubotan! Moreover, you should get lessons on how to handle a kubotan. This is not a tool that is used on its own: you may need to perfect or, at the very least, have working knowledge of a martial art so that you can defend yourself effectively.

Lastly, it is also your responsibility to know if using such a keychain would be legal in your state or county. Not all counties, states, or even countries approve the use of the ninja keychain kubotan as a weapon. There are limits to how and where you can use it. For more information, talk to your local police or legal experts.

Ninja keychain kubotan is an effective and portable self defense weapon that you can attach to a keychain and keep with you at all times.

Why Carry a Self Defense Weapon?

By Bryan Hough

Though you probably assume that you are safe from violent crimes, unfortunately this is not always the case. Too many people think that criminals only come after "other people," but of course this simply is not true. Don't go through life thinking that such events won't ever happen to you; you won't be prepared for the unfortunate reality that they might. Every second of the day, a violent crime is happening somewhere in the country to someone who thought that crime would never affect them.

Start with the basics, or your daily routine. Protect yourself from attack by keeping doors and windows locked, and don't go anywhere alone at night. These strategies are necessary, but alone they will not be enough to prevent assaults. You never know where or when criminal attacks could happen. Be prepared to prevent such attacks no matter where you are. Avoid situations that could lead to an attack, and consider your self defense strategy now, rather than when you need it.

Though many people think that they could just push or kick their way out of a physically violent situation, this is far from the case. In the vast majority of self defense situations, your martial arts abilities will pale in comparison to the attacker's skills, size, and weapons. Always remember that an attacker comes prepared to fight, but the victim does not. Fighting back using solely your own strength should only be done as a last resort when you are caught unprepared and are not carrying any other means for protection.

A much better way to defend yourself against physical attacks is to carry a self defense weapon with you. Most people assume that this must mean a firearm or a knife, but in fact there is a wide range of non lethal self defense products from which to choose. Pepper spray canisters, a very popular choice, come in styles small enough to fit inside a handbag or even a jacket pocket. Just pull out your pepper spray canister and press the button to shoot the pepper spray directly in your attacker's face. This spray will stop them in their tracks. If you've never seen pepper spray in use, you'll be surprised at how fast your attacker goes down. This method gives you up to 30 minutes to safely get away from the situation.

You may think that it would be easier to yell and kick, waiting for help to arrive. The reality is that the first few seconds of the attack are your only chance to get away without serious harm. Police officers or bystanders will simply come to your aid too late. You must be responsible for your own defense by carrying self defense products such as pepper spray. If someone tries to attack you, what are the chances that a police officer, security guard, or even just a bystander is within hearing distance or eyesight? Since most attackers will choose to attack you when you appear alone or vulnerable, this probably isn't very likely. You will be essentially on your own to stop the attack, and carrying self defense products is a wise investment for your own safety.

Pepper Spray Products - Heat Level Matters

By Steve Thibeault

Few people are aware that pepper sprays can differ according to its "hotness" or "heat". Such variations are as important as the type of pepper spray you choose and can certainly affect your weapon's rate of effectiveness.

How is Hotness Measured?

SHU or Scoville Heat Units is the unit of measurement for a chili pepper's hotness. Wilbur Scoville, an American chemist, was the one who invented the Scoville Scale, and the higher the product's SHU rating, the more effective it will be against your attacker.

SHU gives a numerical equivalent to the amount of capsaicin in a particular pepper or pepper spray product. This substance is what's responsible for the self-defense effects of pepper sprays.

Typical Range of Heat

Let's start with sweet bell pepper. This particular pepper scores a zero at the Scoville Scale because it doesn't contain any amount of capsaicin. Pepperocini and pimento, which is also a common culinary ingredient, get higher ratings with an average of 100 to 500 SHU. Jalapenos, on the other hand, have a higher rating with 2,500 to 8,000 SHU.

Do you have a liking for Tabasco? If so, you might be interested to know that Tabasco comes with several levels of rating. Its green pepper is rated mildly spicy with a 600 to 800 range. Its regular pepper variety scores between 2,500 and 5,000 while its habanero gets an extra spicy rating of 7,000 to 8,000 SHU.

The More Exotic, the Hotter It Gets

Cayenne peppers contain quite a high amount of capsaicin with thirty to fifty thousand SHU. But that's not the most capsaicin you can get from exotic pepper varieties.

Enjoy spice levels from 50,000 to 80,000 with Thai Peppers. Check out Naga Jolokia peppers and you'll have your ears puffing with spice ratings of 850,000 and up. Still not enough hotness for you? Then how about Dorset Naga peppers, which pack 1,600,000 SHU inside them?

How Hot Can Pepper Spray Products Go?

Pepper spray products have to contain greater and purer levels of capsaicin to make sure they'll be able to defend you from harm. Ordinary pepper spray products can score anywhere between 2 - 5 million in the Scoville Scale, but obviously the more expensive models may offer more than that.

Does the Heat Levels Matter?

In a nutshell, yes. The higher the SHU rating of your pepper spray product, the longer its effects will last, maybe enough to give you the necessary time to run away to safety and call for help.

When shopping for pepper spray products, spray patterns aren't the only thing you should consider. Heat levels are just as important. The higher the heat level, the longer its effects would last. Check out one from TBOTECH Self Defense Products.

Pepper Spray Basics

By Bobby L Hunt

You have probably seen or even used one or more of the many self-defense sprays on the market today. For many years, mace and similar products were the only ones available. These self-defense sprays contained tear gas like substances that were debilitating to an attacker. Legal issues however began to arise, as these products were not legal in all 50 states. This gave rise to one of the most popular self-defense tools on the market, pepper spray.

Ingredients

Pepper spray is also known as oleoresin capsicum, which is an irritant to the eyes. This spray will cause large volume of tears and in some cases temporary blindness. The active ingredient, capsicum, is derived from many plants including the chili hence the name pepper spray.

The most common canister for this type of spray is a purse size device that can be easily concealed and carried by anyone for protection. Some creative manufacturers have come up with a smaller spray conveniently concealed in things like rings or as projectiles that can be fired from a paintball like gun.

Effects

This type of spray is considered an inflammatory agent, when sprayed in an attackers face it causes almost immediate closing of the eyes and intense tear production. Depending on the strength of the spray these effects can begin in seconds and last anywhere for 15 minutes to one hour.

More and more people are choosing to buy pepper spray for the immediate effects and non-lethal nature of the self-defense device. Mace and other sprays have been found to cause serious breathing problems and in some cases have led to death. Pepper spray on the other hand has never been successfully linked to deaths, though the American Civil Liberty Union has noted 26 cases of people who have died after being sprayed, however spray was not listed as cause of death.

Legality

You can buy pepper spray in all 50 states in the union, however in some areas there are stipulations to use, concentration and availability. If you are thinking of using pepper spray you should check with local law enforcement first.

* New York- Vendors of self defense sprays must be a licensed fire arms dealer

* Massachusetts- Purchaser must obtain a special permit, the Firearms Identification Card

* California- canisters can be no larger than 2.5 ounces

* Michigan- The concentration of pepper spray can be no more than 2%; limited to 35 grams per canister and no combination sprays are allowed

* Wisconsin- No tear gas, UV dyes or combinations allowed, 10% limit on concentration, 15-60 grams and the canister must have a safety mechanism.

Pepper spray is of course not allowed on any commercial airliner and you are limited in the amount you can carry in your checked luggage.

Conclusion

People have chosen to buy a self defense spray for many different reasons but the number one reason is the fact that it is non-lethal. It is one thing to protect yourself and quite another to live with potentially taking another person's life.

While this kind of spray is an excellent, self defense tool it is good to use wisdom in all situations and never depend on the spray totally. There have been cases where an attacker high on drugs was not fazed in the least by these kinds of sprays. Use common sense and perhaps take a defense class if you are going to be in dangerous situations often.

Bobby Hunt is an author on many topics including pepper spray. If you need more information to decide if this self defense tool is right for you or information about where to buy pepper spray please visit nonlethalprotection.com.

Dog Attack First Line of Defense-Telescopic Stun Baton

By Jack Krohn

Is there any doubt in your mind about the potential dangers we face every day in out lives with assaults, robberies, car jackings, home invasions, and dog attacks-yes dog attacks. You cannot imagine the fear a dog attack imposes on you unless you have experienced one.

Don't get me wrong I am not wishing one on you-quite the contrary-I am hoping you never have one.

Self defense products like the telescoping stun baton are meant to give you time to escape a dangerous situation to seek help or just get away. Usually these products are regarded as an effective way to defend yourself against human assaults and they are very good at doing that.

Dog attacks are becoming increasingly frequent with literally thousands of them happening every day. Every year 4.7 million times "man's best friend" attacks that friend with 800,000 folks seeking medical attention for dog bites-half of these are children.

Of those injured over 350,000 require emergency room care according to the CDC.

Walking sticks, canes, anything long that can be used as a weapon for self defense are some of the things I see when I am out walking. And nearly everyone has one. Several products can help like the super sonic dog chaser and a dog pepper spray.

Without a doubt the best is the telescopic stun baton.

How It Works:

It is neatly packaged in a 13 inch holster. Take it out of the holster and press the button. That does two things; extends it to 21.5 inches and charges the extension with 800,000 volts of hair raising power all in a split second. It is that easy.

Touch a dog for a second or two and he will long remember to not bother you again. Touch a human assailant for 3-5 seconds and watch him turn to jello in front of you. Stun devices leave no lasting effects on humans or dogs.

The stun baton has a powerful light and a 120 db alarm for added security and safety. It is rechargeable too saving you money for years. Oh yeah did I mention it has a lifetime warranty?

This is the perfect solution to a growing problem of dog attacks for anyone who walks, runs, jogs or cycles outdoors or makes their living making deliveries-mail carriers, milkmen, UPS and Fed Ex drivers, etc.

Make it your first line of defense in protecting your self from dog attacks.

Self Defense Items to Fight Crime

By Jack Krohn

When people think of crime fighting, they think of one thing-a super hero like Batman, Spiderman, Superman et.al. They can certainly get it done. Next they think of local law enforcement.

I think the world of our men and women in law enforcement. They have my utmost respect. They deserve that for the risks they take every day. They are faced with challenges every day that make most cringe at the thought.

They are armed with deadly force and some non lethal self defense items to do their jobs. They face, as they call it, a "continuum" of challenges every day and need to be able to deal with them all. No small task to be sure!

If you have any doubts about the level of crime all you need do is watch the evening news. It seems from the reporting that is escalating. Maybe that just sells ads-I don't think so.

Law enforcement really can't stop a crime anyhow-just a fact especially with thinning resources. It is up to individuals to assume more responsibility for their own safety and develop a strategy for their own self defense. But you need some help. What do you do? Where do you turn?

How about this for some ideas.

1. Self defense DVD's are a way to learn some basic self defense techniques. They are teaching tools and can be a family project-to learn together. You can learn from some of the best instructors in the world right in your own living room. Self defense techniques are a great way to build your confidence as well.

2. Learn about stun guns, pepper sprays and tasers then make your purchase of the one(s) that best suit your needs. Then learn how to use them.

3. Practice using the self defense items you bought. Make their use second nature. Practice in different emergency scenarios. When and if the time comes you know exactly what to do instead of wondering what to do. Practice with a friend, neighbor, or your family so it becomes reflexive. In an emergency you really have no time to think and seconds count.

These ideas will increase your confidence and your actual ability to defend yourself and your family. Self confidence is a huge part of a personal security strategy.

Self Protection Devices For Women - Lipstick Pepper Spray For When You Tell Him 'No'

By Larry Zolna

Self Protection has become a top priority for women today. Just read the newspapers or watch the news on TV to see how dangerous our world has become.

What has happened to dating? It used to be fun, exciting and safe! Today, dating might still be fun and exciting but is it really safe?

Well, here's a self protection suggestion to help keep you safe just in case your date tries to get a little too up close and personal, especially if you say no. Keep a Lipstick Pepper Spray in your purse or pocket handy for use.

Yes, I said Lipstick Pepper Spray. Now you can have pure stopping power in your hand and he'll never even see it coming.

If you use lipstick (or even if you don't) and you feel that things may be getting out of hand with your date, just take the Lipstick Pepper Spray container out - he most likely won't mind and even might like the thought of some freshly applied lipstick. Little does he know that you're armed with a compact but powerful self protection device.

If he continues his pursuit, give him one or two squirts directly in the face, aiming for the eyes. This will cause the creep to have instant and severe tearing of his eyes as well as uncontrollable coughing which will last from 15-45 minutes.

Please do NOT stand there and yell at the guy because even though he can't see very well he can still swing his arms or lunge at you. Don't give him the chance - get out of there fast and call 911 so the cops can deal with him. His 'dream date' will wind up being a date in court!

One other thing - the effects of Lipstick Pepper Spray are non-lethal and temporary. They can be eased with lots of water. However, continual rubbing of the eyes will only make the effects worse and make them last longer. Maybe this is this something that you won't want to share with your date - let him find it out himself!

Don't be the next victim!

Self Protection For Women - Lipstick Pepper Spray, a Must in Every Purse

By Larry Zolna

We live in a dangerous world today, especially for women. Always be prepared for the unexpected when leaving your house. Lipstick Pepper Spray is small and compact and can even be carried in your hand when you are in a potentially dangerous situation such as a dark parking lot looking for your car.

Lipstick Pepper Spray is a good deterrent to show your date that your 'no' means 'NO!'.

Lipstick Pepper Spray is actually a chameleon. Most women carry lipstick in their purse so it's no surprise when a man sees her take it out to use it. Little does he know that she is now armed with a self protection device that will stop him in his tracks if he decides to 'go too far'.

It looks exactly a tube of lipstick but inside it contains 5 one-second bursts of pepper spray that will cause immediate copious tearing of the eyes as well as uncontrollable coughing, which will incapacitate any guy who won't back off when you tell him to.

Aim the Lipstick Pepper Spray for your attacker's eyes - a little bit goes a long way but why not squirt him twice for a longer lasting effect. After all, he asked for it by not obeying your warnings.

This self protection device also comes in handy if you're in your parked car and someone comes up and tries to assault you - just reach into your purse and squirt, squirt - you'll leave him coughing and gagging on the street. Then, get the heck out of there and call 911 so that the police can take care of the situation.

Don't try to get involved - the spray has already done the job on the creep but he is still capable of punching or grabbing you if you're close enough. Just get out of his reach and out of there as quickly as you can.

Never leave home without a Lipstick Pepper Spray in your purse or pocket. Even if you are not out on a date you are still susceptible to attacks even while walking to your car, or, if you are a college coed, walking to the library or the dorm.

Don't be the next crime statistic. Be prepared for the unexpected with Lipstick Pepper Spray - it could save your life someday!

By the way, Pepper Spray also comes in a heart-shaped perfume container the size of a lipstick tube. Additional information on this self protection device can be found at the women's self defense website mentioned above.

What is Self Defense?

By Adam Sisterhen

What is self defense? Really, what is it? A lot of people have various opinions on this subject and depending on who you talk to their opinions range from casual to extreme. Often with most things in life you have to throw out the effortless and the complicated to find the answer somewhere in the middle. Occam's razor put simple states all things being created equal the simplest answer is better. Therefore if we take that approach to this question; what is self defense, what is the answer?

The answer for each person is going to be different; life experiences dictate this. There is no one answer that is completely correct. Depending on what you have been through in your life whether they are complicated situations at best to the most atrocious acts against you will cause your opinion to vary greatly. They person who grew up in a great area and was protected from the outside violent world won't see self defense is the same light as someone who grew up within a hard environment without a lot of guidance. If you read James Mitoses' book on what is self defense you will find an incredible well thought out heavily disciplined look at it from an old world Chinese and Japanese structure with principles of keeping face, strict rules, and laws. That certainly is one form; but what I'm looking for is what a well rounded in between answer that fits what self defense really is; cause after all a relatively simple answer is optimal.

The legal term for self defense is important to give respect to the law and to us to make sure we are on the correct side of it. Legal: "To be acquitted of any kind of physical harm-related crime (such as assault and battery and homicide) using the self-defense justification, one must prove legal provocation, meaning that one must prove that they were in a position where not using self-defense would most likely lead to significant injury to life, limb, or property." Ok, that leaves things pretty wide open for interpretation by a jury, the courts, lawyers; let's try to keep away from those situations.

I've researched and read many books and talked to many well accomplished self defense instructors before I came to my conclusion on what is self defense. I believe the answer is as easy as this; the ability to protect you, your loved ones, and family against any force that wants to cause you harm using equal force.

Don't Become a Victim of Crime

By Adam Sisterhen

I wanted to tell you about a crime that took place in my life. My vehicle was broken into over night as it was sitting in my driveway with security lights lighting the area, not motion lights just dusk to dawn lights. I think I'm going to make a few changes there. I live with my family in a good neighborhood that doesn't really have any kind of crime. The thief damaged my door lock braking in and stole misc change, flash lights, and my day timer which carried my checkbook and misc personal information as well as the usual schedule for the weeks and months ahead. The reason I'm telling you this is because of my incompetence.

If you live in a good area that doesn't mean that you won't fall victim to atrocities, it just means you are less likely to have them take place. Being vigilant is always the best way to stop or prevent unwanted atrocities taking place to you or your family. The crime could have been a great deal worse than it was; it also could have been a lot less. What things do you think could have been done to help avoid this from happening? There are many things I could have implemented; a car alarm, motion lights, a driveway alarm etc. The list could go on and on.

The one and most important thing I didn't do that wouldn't have stopped this from happening but would have made the event a lot less troublesome is very simply, taking things of value out of the vehicle. If I would have brought my day timer inside with me the major loss would have been avoided. The other misc items don't wreak havoc with my life like the loss of my check book and personal information that was stolen. Sure that doesn't make the fact that I was victim change or ease my mind, but it defiantly changes the criminal's next move. The criminal wouldn't have possible information to steal my identity or worse. Prevention is always best; however taking the proper steps can defiantly increase your chances of not being a victim.

Being vigilant of your surroundings and carrying the proper personal security or self defense product can stop or lessen the extent of any atrocity that you might encounter. For instance walking from your place of business to your car alone could be an enormous mistake. If you have someone walk with you it decreases your likeliness of being a victim. If that isn't an option, from the moment you leave the building have your key chain pepper spray, Taser, personal alarm, or stun gun in your hand ready to use; look around for anything unusual or out of place. Perhaps a person or persons that usually are not there or acting suspiciously, a car parked improperly. Listen to sounds around you like footsteps people whispering etc.

Conclusion:

By having you personal security and self defense product ready if some was to approach you, you will already have the upper hand in the situation, by being vigilant of your surroundings you can see or hear persons on the prowl. Being Vigilant is the best way to assure your safety. Remember the best time to learn your lesson about personal security and self defense is before something happens.

Women's Self Defense - Easy Weapons With Which To Defend Yourself

By Ian Newton

Are you prepared to defend yourself?

Firstly you must be fully prepared to defend yourself. Not half hearted you must be prepared to commit. As a woman you have a right to self defense. Yes of course there are times when it is best to just hand over your purse or even your car and walk away.

But...there are times when you either fight back or risk serious injury or death. What if I fight back and the attack is worse? Yes this is possible, but that kind of person was only interested in exerting power over and violence anyway.

Where self defense starts.

1.The first moment you feel threatened, you use your first two weapons.1.Your voice. Yell, scream, shout at your attacker, warn them to start away. Shout FIRE, not help. In this day and age many people are afraid to respond to a call of help. But, FIRE gets everyone's attention.

2.Your distance. Create mental boundaries, perhaps 5 yards/metres, become aware, 3 yards/metres face the person, if they are coming at you, shout, yell scream.

How to use a weapon

If you watch movies, often the person using a weapon extends it towards the attacker. Unfortunately an aggressive person will laugh at this weak show of defense. They will easily step forward and take the weapon and perhaps use it against their victim.

If your weapon is your car keys. Hold them in your right hand, with a key protruding. Keep this hand buy your side or hidden against your stomach or chest. Slightly extend your left hand in a stop position towards the attacker's chest. This means your left foot would be slight forward to create balance. Simply reverse if you are left handed.

This obviously sounds barbaric to a peaceful person. Firstly you are unlikely to cause serious injury and secondly you are acting in defense of your life.

The moment of attack.

At this moment you are shouting, As your attacker lunges at you they will try to grab your extended hand. At this point you withdraw left quickly and attack strongly with your right weapon. Next quickly kick the shin or stomp the foot, with lots of power.

PS If the weapon hand is stopped then you can use the balance of the person, while their hands are engaged with yours to attack their shins and feet. The moment they release you then use your weapon hand or free hand to attack.

A Good Example.

You have to move quickly and with force. But...you do not need to be strong. In Australia two strong young men broke into a residence. The owner responded to a noise and was confronted by these two men. One grabbed her by the throat, she responded by grabbing him by the ears and kneeing him in the groin. She called for help and some neighbours came to the rescue. Both men were arrested and charged.

What was special about this lady? Well she was an Olympic swimming champion, which is why this attack attracted so much media attention. But...what was most interesting is that she is 77 years old!

She wasn't strong, she wasn't young and fit, but she was able to take immediate action.

If you have a weapon such as keys or a pen, do not wave it in a threatening manner. As in the first instance it will be easily be taken away from you. Remember to keep it close and out of site. You need the element of surprise in your self defense.

A few common items you may have with you when out and about.

Key or keys, pen, lipstick tube, mobile phone, compact umbrella, hard glasses case, eye brow, or eye liner pencil, nail clippers,. These articles are not legally perceived as a weapon, as would be scissors' or a pocket knife. And of course you can travel by air with most regular items.

It is important to practice your response moves. It is best to use a partner who is taller and heavier than you. They may need to wear protective eye wear. Because you will be reluctant to use force on your friend, it is useful to practice forcefully responding against a cushion against a wall.

Practice your shin kicks and foot stomps again on a solid spongy item on the floor or leaning against the wall. You can buy high density foam and wrap it around a solid item.

Self Defense For Women and Your Car - 12 Tips For Personal Safety

By Liza Cooper

Much crime takes place in and around cars. And, too often, women are targets. By taking these commonsense precautions you can avoid most unpleasant situations before they occur. And no black belt in martial arts is needed.

Here are some actions you can take:

  • Keep you car well maintained. Anything that immobilizes you makes you a sitting duck for predators. So keep your car well maintained, make certain your tires are in good shape and don't let the gas tank sink down to the "E."
  • Keep your guard up in parking lots of malls and shopping centers. These places are targets for car thieves and other predators.
  • Keep your car keys in your hands as you approach your car, especially in large shopping center lots. A woman fiddling for her keys is a good target.
  • Keep your eyes and ears open when you approach your car. Take a look around you. Is anyone following? Silently note the appearance of the people and your environment. Is anyone lurking near your car? Be especially wary when you are loading or unloading bags or large items.
  • Take a look inside the passenger compartment before getting into your car. True tale: a Long Island woman unknowingly drive home from the shopping mall with an intruder crouched in her back seat. Take a look underneath the car while you're at it, too.
  • Be cautious when approaching your car if it is parked next to a large SUV or other vehicle in a parking lot. Large vehicles block the view of onlookers and conceal predators.
  • Lock your car. Lock your car from the inside as soon as you enter and lock it from the outside when you leave. Many a car has been stolen because it was left unlocked. But more important, you prevent an unwanted person from having access to you when you are sitting inside a locked car.
  • Park in a well lit area when possible. Predators like to hide in the shadows.
  • Keep your windows closed especially when driving on residential and commercial streets. Predators have been known to force their way in through car windows of drivers stopped at intersections.
  • For that reason, don't sit your handbag on the passenger seat next to you when driving. Your handbag is an enticing target for thieves who will snatch and grab--or break a window.
  • Don't leave valuables in plain sight when you leave your car. If you use a window mounted GPS, be sure to take it with you and wipe off the tell-tale suction marks on your windshield when you leave your car.
  • If you plan to valet park your car, keep your car keys separate from other keys and only give the valet the key necessary to start your car.

If you see someone or something that makes you feel uncomfortable, trust your instincts, move away from the threat (such as to the other side of the vehicle), or call for help.

Women's Self-Defense - Picking a Program

By Alexandra Rathbone

As unfortunate as it is, we live in a world where women need to worry about their safety in both their public and private lives. Sexual assault statistics are as high as ever, indicating that women from all socio-economic backgrounds are being attacked on the street and in their homes. This has led many women to look for a program to teach them to defend themselves. But which self defense for women classes are the right ones to attend?

For some women, martial arts schools are very accessible, as they are prolific around the United States and are especially popular in suburban areas. However, traditional and franchise martial arts programs are not designed for self defense, especially women's self defense. Although programs such as Tae Kwon Do and freestyle Karate are great sports and can be great exercise, their application to real life is minimal. Look for a program that is specifically designed for self-defense and for women.

When looking for a women's self defense program, it is important to choose a program that spends time talking about prevention of physical confrontations. The best self-defense technique is to never have a situation escalate to physical contact; but you need to know what to look for and how to react.

A good women's self defense program will include techniques while you are standing and while you are on the ground. Many programs put heavy emphasis on striking while you are on your feet, but the reality of most fights and defense scenarios is that they end up on the ground. Being able to move yourself and properly contact your opponent on the ground is a skill, not something that is instinctual. Keywords to look for are "grappling", "ground fighting" or "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu" when shopping for a program.

Having at least one woman instructor in the program is beneficial. Many men do not realize how big they are or how much stronger their upper body is than a woman's and, therefore, teach techniques that are not the most effective ones for a woman to perform. If you have a woman instructor, they are more likely to teach you the techniques that work for them, for their strength and size.

Lastly, a good women's self defense program designates a lot of time to repetition and is spread out over a decent amount of time, such as a six-week program. A one-time, two-hour seminar is not enough time or repetition to really ingrain the techniques into your body and mind, especially if you have never done martial arts before.

It is so important for women to learn to defend themselves and feel confident in their level of safety. Do your research, grab a friend, and get started!

8 Very Effective Self Defense Techniques

By Steve R McDowell

The best way to protect yourself is to avoid a fight altogether, but what happens when you are forced into a fight? You may need to protect yourself through the use of force. Keep in mind that the ultimate goal is not to beat up your assailant, but to escape from them. These are 10 great methods for striking your assailant in a way that will disable them long enough for you to escape, with or without a weapon, so that your attempts at self defense will be successful.

  1. Stomp on their foot! This particular technique is often available when many of the others are not. The downside is that it's not nearly as effective as many of the others, but stomping on their foot can give you the opportunity to use a more effective technique so that you can safely run away.
  2. Kick their knees! Like most of these techniques, this will hurt! But more than that, it will make it harder for them to chase you when you run away. It's generally hard to see this attack coming, making it quite effective.
  3. Box their ears! By cupping your hand slightly and smacking their ear (or ears), you can cause what is essentially a VERY loud noise VERY close to their ear. This can cause intense pain, and can even cause permanent damage if you manage to break their eardrum. Either way, intense pain in that particular area will disorient your attacker, giving you ample time to get away.
  4. Hit their solar plexus! You might have no idea what a solar plexus is, but that's ok, I'm about to explain it. It's an area that's just a little bit above the stomach and directly below the rib cage. Follow the bottom edges of your rib cage until you get to the highest part. There should be a little bone sticking down right there. You can either hit that bone or hit just barely below it. There is a fairly large collection of nerves there that, when hit directly, can cause intense pain and create the same effect as "knocking the wind out of them", so they will have a hard time breathing. If you break that bone, it will be even more painful. This will likely stop any attacker in their tracks. The downside is that you have a fairly small area to hit, and it's an area that is easily guarded if the attacker sees you going for it.
  5. Strike their groin! Yes, it's cliché. Yes, it's "cheap". Yes, it's very effective. A punch, a kick, or a weapon of some kind can all work well. It can even be effective against females, just not as effective. Keep in mind, though, that you may need to use more of an upward motion in your strike if your attacker is female. However, it is true that, statistically speaking, more attackers are male than female, so it's relatively unlikely that you'll need to worry about that.
  6. Hit them in the neck! Necks are very sensitive, especially the front of the neck. Striking someone there will cause them to feel like they are being choked for several seconds, along with the pain of being hit in general. Keep in mind, though, that if you hit TOO hard, you could crush their trachea and actually kill them. This is unlikely, though, because it really takes a lot of force to do that.
  7. Gouge their eyes! This is one of the most effective methods for disorienting someone. By simply jabbing your finger(s) into their eye(s), you will cause a lot of pain, their eyes will tear up, they will be disoriented, and their vision will go blurry for several very valuable seconds, giving you time to run. This technique can also cause permanent damage depending on how hard you jab their eyes, how long your fingernails are, and exactly what part of the eye you hit.
  8. Do a combo! It may sound silly when phrased like that, but doing two or three of these attacks in rapid succession can increase your chance of success and give you more time to escape. However, don't let it tempt you to stand there and wail on them. It's always better to do only what you need to do and then run.
Be careful with these self defense techniques, especially in the way that you practice them. Many of them can cause permanent damage, and a couple even have the potential to kill somebody, so don't just try them on your friends to see how well they work.

Try them on a non-living target if you feel the need to practice them, but otherwise, save them for an emergency!

Why is it Important to Carry Personal Security and Self Defense Products?

By Adam Sisterhen

Watching the news lately has really reinforced what I have been saying with a sense of urgency; the need for personal security self defense products and self defense training. You can't be sure that some of the recent deaths could have been avoided; however it's possible they could have been avoided by carrying personal security self defense products and having self defense training. Being prepared can ward off a lot of tragic, terrible circumstances, and possible save your life. It gives you the element of surprise your attacker isn't ready for. They approach you thinking they have the upper hand until a shot of pepper spray hits them right in the face or a Taser renders their bodies useless or a palm heel strike to the face takes them back giving you the opportunity to flee. Every time I hear or read about such atrocities it makes my skin crawl.

The unfortunate part is that even though we have some of the finest trained police officers in the world they aren't always there in our time of need. I can't stress enough how important it is to carry personal security self defense equipment and have self defense training. I would strongly recommend practicing with your personal security self defense products so you are ready and able to handle your equipment. You need to take action now, so you don't wish you had purchased that for you, your spouse, or your children after the fact. By being prepared with the proper equipment and training can you put the odds on you or your loved one's side

In my opinion a Taser is the best product for personal security and self defense today; owning a Taser comes with responsibility and training. Pepper spray is the next best thing. Both can accomplish what you need; a chance to get away from your attacker.

Here are some reasons I believe Tasers are awesome personal security devices.

  • Neuromuscular Incapacitation: They actually disrupt your assailant's nervous system rendering them useless.
  • They are a non-lethal weapon that can be carried in most states. ("TASER devices are not considered firearms by the US Government. They can be legally carried (concealed or open) without permit required in 43 states. Prohibited citizen use in DC, HI, MA, MI, NJ, NY, RI, WI, certain cities and counties. CT and IL are legal with restrictions. Check local laws before purchasing or carrying electronic control devices." Courtesy of Taser International.)
  • They work from up to 15 feet away. Giving you a comfortable space between you and the attacker.
  • They can penetrate up to 2 inches of clothing. This makes it great for even cold climate areas.
  • A hit on any part of the body can be effective; which allows the stressed filled person to hit their target. Practice, practice, practice is still the best policy.
  • They are one of the most reliable forms of self defense equipment.
  • Anti-Felon identification makes the product great for keeping people from using them irresponsibly.

Here are some reasons why I believe Pepper Spray is a wonderful personal security device.

  • The effects; Pepper Spray causes the eyes to seal with tears, nose to run, excessive coughing, shortness of breath, and extreme burning sensations. Taking the fight right out of a person.
  • Pepper Spray doesn't just wipe off. In fact rubbing can intensify the burn.
  • Concealment; Pepper Sprays are available in many forms. From the key chain spray to pens, lip stick and even pagers. There is a Pepper Spray for every situation you may need it for. Home use, traveling, jogging, walking, work etc.
  • Light weight easy to carry.
  • Affordable. Pepper Spray definitely gives you the best results for the price.
  • Range; some spray's are good up to 25 feet.
  • Easy to use. There isn't a lot of training required. Again practice, practice, practice.

Each product has its own relevance to each situation you encounter. In my opinion both Pepper Spray and Tasers are great for helping you keep your distance and enable you to flee. Now all that being said there is no cure for every situation and there can be draw backs to these products i.e. pepper spray in extreme wind can cause blow back. In light of that being prepared and trained with the right products just might save your life. If you want to increase your odds of survival even farther take a self defense class.

Remember the best time to learn your lesson about personal security and self defense is before something happens! You, your loved ones and closest friends' deserve to be safe.

Self-Defense - Defend Yourself

By Cindy J Stone

Lets have a look at some of the basic rules of self-defense for woman. You as woman has a sixth sense, you should use it and trust your sixth sense. In case you find yourself in any situation that for some reason makes you feel uncomfortable, unsafe of threatened in any way, do not ignore your feelings, trust yourself and your emotion and act on it immediately. Do not hesitate, get out of the situation as quickly as you can.

All woman, including you and me, we all have the ability to turn any crisis into an opportunity for us. Lets look at one example of such a crisis that we can change and use as an opportunity, lets say you wake up with a naked man next to your bed, the crisis is he is in your room naked, but the opportunity is that he has an open very vulnerable target are exposed for you to use. One hard blow or strike to his groin could stop an attack entire, or give yourself enough time to get well away. Most of us do not realize that we are actually much much stronger than we think, you have power, use it.

Stay committed to your goal, and that is to stock an attack or get well away from your attacker. If your first plan does not work, try the next one, and then another one, until you are successful. Be serious and committed about wanting to stop the attack, and maintain a strong attitude throughout the fight.

In order for you to be successful at self-defense, you have to shift your mindset. It is very important to have a true and urgent desire to get out of your current threatening situation and you must have a willingness to do and try absolutely whatever it takes to succeed. You have to develop your mental strength, your emotional strength and your physical ability as well, but your attitude comes first of all, the actual self-defense comes second. Commit yourself to your goal, no matter what it takes, and maintain endurance the entire time, no matter how long it takes.

Your body is a walking weapon, and all your weapons you take with you where ever you go, to your work, where you go to play and even to bed with you. The attacker has sensitive body target areas as well, and he takes it with where he goes as well, and these areas when struck could stop and attack from becoming a rape or murder. How would you fight back and what areas would you use when such an attacker comes into your space, bringing his target areas within easy reach of your weapons. Use your fists or hand to strike his nose or groin, as hard as you can. Use your hands to strike or clap his ears. Your fingers you use to poke his eyes as deep and hard as you can. Stab him in the throat with all your force with one strong straight finger. Use your knee, foot or leg to force it into his groin as hard as you can. Use your leg to kick him, then when he folds, use your elbow to strike down on his spine or neck. Use your foot to stamp on his foot with all the force you can.

Then, don't ever feel sorry for him, or use less than all your strength and might on him, remember that if you don't hurt him, he is going to hurt you, and he might even go as far as to kill you. While each and every attack and attacker might vary, it is up to you the individual to decide whether a particular situation calls for physical self-defense, verbal defense or just withdrawal. Be strong, use your strength and your weapons and save yourself.

The Best in Self Defense

By Teresa Conrad

There have been many court records stating cases of rape, harassment or physical attack. Most of these have women as their top victims, since men are believed to have the ability to defend themselves more. Yes, defend...

Women have been advised time and again to prepare themselves against aggressors that may attack them anytime possible. They are everywhere: the streets, the office, even at school. They may be people who are familiar or complete strangers. Most importantly their motives differ.

They may be rapists or just plain robbers. Either way, they represent "danger" to a streetwalker (especially female streetwalkers). They ambush with their schemes and at times the usual kick at the groin or poking the eyes are not enough lifesavers, unlike what was seen in movies. And though martial arts seemed like a cool way to get safety, there are other ways to do it - learning what self defense really means.

Self defense is all about using the head and not whatever physical attacks necessary to blow down an oppressor. They may work though but everything is not always about "the way of the fists". It's a known fact that thinking before acting brings out the best in everything we try to do.

Brains are the best weapon ever and a background check on self defense would prove this claim as only 10 percent of it pertains to physical counter-moves. The remaining 90 percent are all about keeping calm and being aware of one's surroundings to know how to prevent such ambushes from the suspected attacker. Know who he is and how to fight him before he even attacks is the first thing to do. If things did get aggressive, it's time to bring out those sharp ideas and strike back (get physical). Here's how to prevent an attack.

1. Keep calm and cool

An attacker would always look for easy targets. They would often look for women who are busy with their phones, have their hands full (like after going in the grocer) and seem fearful. Have a confident placing. In court records, cases have been posted where the victims are usually those who are unaware and are freaked out if they find someone following them. They usually end up in dark alleys where no one would be able to help them. Another fact is that attacking at once may only get the oppressor fired up that may lead the contact to be much worst.

Keeping the chin up and looking like the girl who's aware is a sure way to keeping the bad men away. These women have the tag "bring it on" posted on their foreheads.

2. They are not always at the dark

Keep in mind that attackers are not always those who creep out from the dark. They may be people whom we call associates. There is this one sure way to keep their secret evil motives from manifesting, and keep us miles away at once. This is called de-escalation.

De-escalation is speaking or acting in a way that may keep the worst from happening. Example of such is throwing the wallet when a robber attacks instead of fighting back. Sometimes this method is for keeping one's rage calmed down by agreeing with him or her: example is when harassed. These are ways to have their focus redirected thus keeping one away in a tight situation.

3. Learn safety measures

Know the streets traveled as much as possible. Go to places where there are many people. Keep out of those where being alone means trouble. Know hang-outs which are safe. Try to convince friends the joints which you believe are safe from possible attackers. Also have a buddy when walking at night.

Instant communication is also a must. Have the speed dial of your cell phones ready in case of emergency. More than that posts a written schedule of activities that they ought to know about. Be direct in saying where you'll be going, with whom, and the time to come home.

4. It's time to learn self-defense

Be more aware than ever. There are moves that attacker may find themselves surprised. These are moves which they least expect before giving the kick at the groin and poking the eyes. It's a great add to confidence if the techniques on fighting back can be learned.

There are times, however, that rather than hand to hand combat, lectures in self defense classes give attention to ingenuity. A pen may be used as a weapon as an umbrella. A simple kick may not be martial arts yet it may do wonders. Inhalers (for asthmatic) and spray perfumes may also serve as pepper sprays giving the target a chance to get away fast.

Remember, a good self defense class helps a person in sizing up the situation.

Anticipating an attacker means giving focus on learning from other's past experiences and taking in the present to know how to keep safe. Self defense is not about getting aggressive, it's about knowing how to keep one away from harm's way. So for women who are the usual targets of assaults, here's the best reminder to keep the attackers away: Think before you act.

Stun Guns: Non-Lethal Self-Defense

The notion of self-defense conjures up pictures of Dirty Harry or Bruce Lee, but the truth is a lot more down-to-earth than that (which may help explain to some degree why such movies are so popular). Indeed, for most of human history, self-defense was just another fact of life, another chore in life, an everyday task. Speaking of movies, one of the most famous cut-scenes in all of cinematic history was in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, at the beginning of the film when a man-ape throws up into the air a bone he'd just used as a weapon, which bone then "becomes" a cylindrical spacecraft floating in space above earth - thus connecting war and technology, a proposition that's been made by many thinkers through the ages. So far from being some relic of uncivilized times, war and struggle is what first made civilization possible! As the ancient Greek historian Heraclitus remarked, war is the father of all things. Or as the Roman military writer Vegetius advised, si vis pacem para bellum - if you seek peace, prepare for war.

Self-defense should be assumed as a chose, then, or a duty - to or for oneself, to or for one's loved ones. It is too often either something scary or something fun, thus putting off the right crowd and bringing along the wrong one. But taken as just another task in life, it can be seen in the proper light and then pursued properly, which is to say seriously, with respect and with focus.

In today's modern environment, self-defense is a lot more complicated and also a lot simpler. Simpler because it doesn't have to involve the elimination of one's enemy, as in times past, with blood feuds that last several generations, but more complicated because it takes genuine skill to not fatally harm someone. Indeed, the true martial artist is one so masterful as to be able to finely tune his or her lethality. Such an ability is a whole skill-set in itself, requiring years of training at the least, never mind the innate aptitude and who knows what else!

A simpler way would be to employ weapons, specifically those which only disables one's assailant(s), and only temporarily so, with no permanent damage incurred. After all, it would be ridiculous to win on the streets but lose in the courts! So this rules out firearms right away, and even knives, both of which have great potential for inflicting fatal injury. Stun guns, then, appear to be the best choice, everything considered. They are basically non-lethal but definitely effective, capable of knocking someone out for up to a whole half hour at a time, even the drug-fueled. That's a lot of time to get to safety or go for help. A pepper spray is a much cheaper alternative that's almost as effective. Both options are great where not proscribed by law.

Why You Need Self Defense Products - Crime Happens Everywhere

By Jack Krohn

Everyone wants to live in a neighborhood that has no crime. When you find one please let me know. I thought I lived in a low crime area until last week when 14 cars had their windows bashed in right down the street. No more street parking for me.

Unfortunately crime happens everywhere, even in gated communities. Recently here in Colorado Springs burglars got into a gated community and did a home invasion of a home. There are stories of other gated community crimes too.

Since crime happens everywhere you really can't avoid it. What you can do is better prepare yourself to avoid it and take action to learn how to defend yourself.

The best way in my opinion is to start with a basic self defense techniques course from world class instructors in the comfort of your own home on a DVD. To me this represents a good starting point and lays a foundation for you to build on.

It also is a good way for your family to learn along with you-maybe even build some bonding there. The family that learns together stays together or some such.

Then depending on your situation get some self defense products like personal alarms, pepper sprays, stun guns or maybe even a taser.

Personal alarms are great for kids even up to college age. Almost all have key ring attachments and flashlights. They are loud noise makers up to 130 db. The bad guys never want any unneeded attention that these alarms will bring.

Then consider a pepper spray. Pepper sprays are a great first line of defense in an assault situation. They can disable an attacker for up to 25-30 minutes by causing searing pain, tearing so bad the eyes will close, coughing and shortness of breathe. It is nasty stuff indeed. It is inexpensive and really works. Maybe that is why law enforcement officers all over the world carry and use it.

Another option is a stun gun. A stun gun is a hand-held, battery powered device that delivers an electric shock to an assailant. I always advise holding a charging stun gun up for the bad guys to seen.

The noise alone and flying sparks that stun guns show when activated can be enough to scare the bad guys away. Stun guns are easy to carry and hide, some as small as 3" tall, and easy to use. Most are in the $25-$60.00 price range.

And finally there are tasers. Tasers use electro-muscular disruption (EMD) technology which sends an 18-26 watt electrical signal that overrides the central nervous system that controls muscle function. They are pulses of energy so powerful no one has ever been able to overcome their effect.

It shoots out two darts attached to 15 feet of wire. 50,000 volts travel over the insulated wires.

Remember too that the purpose of self defense tools like this to give you time to seek safety, help or just get away from a dangerous situation. They all do that in spades.

Hot Shot Stun Gun - One Cool Self Defense Product

By Jack Krohn

Stun guns are widely regarded as one of the most effective self defense weapons there is.

They are basically simple hand held devices that have two or more prongs that have about an inch or more of separation.

When charged the electricity literally flies between the prongs creating a sight and sound that is pretty scary in its' own right not to mention the effects on an assailant. It will deplete blood sugars from the body equivalent to running a long 40 km race sapping energy levels to zero. The results: disorientation and loss of balance.

A stun device is considered a weapon so don't use it without thought or needlessly. Misuse can result in criminal charges being brought. Leave the "horsing around" stuff to the experts on You Tube.

There are six spots on the body possess nerve centers such as around the upper hip, below the rib cage or the upper shoulders on the right and left hand side of the body. These are the targets for maximum effectiveness. If an assailant is on drugs or drunk a stun gun may not work. Stun guns are 86% effective on average. They don't rely on pain for results.

If you are looking for a cool self defense product in the form of a hot stun gun-this is it! Close to a million volts in a package the size of an average blackberry (3") which makes it so small that it is easily concealed in your hand. Or if you can carry it on your belt like a pager it is that small.

Jack Krohn is the author of over 400 articles on self defense and home security.

A Personal Safety Alarm Can Be an Effective Self Defense Weapon

By Michelle C Roebuck

If you're thinking about getting a self defense product, you might want to buy a personal alarm. It's not your usual self defense weapon. It won't immobilize an attacker but it can be very effective in stopping an attack by scaring off the attacker.

A personal alarm emits a loud sound when you push the button or pull the pin out of the device. The sound can be as loud as 130 decibels. This is loud enough to scare off a potential attacker. The device can come in several sizes and shapes. You can carry it in your pocket, in your purse or you can buy one that goes on your keychain.

Since attackers like to sneak up on their victims, the loud alarm will surprise them. The sound is also loud enough that other people that might be in the area will hear it too. Attackers won't like this and usually they'll run away before help comes.

Of course, there is no guarantee that the personal alarm will help stop an attack. It will probably work in most cases, but you might want an extra layer of protection just to be on the safe side. That's why it's a good idea to carry pepper spray or some other self defense weapon along with the alarm.

One good reason to invest in a personal safety alarm is because some countries and states have strict laws regarding self defense weapons. Some states in the United States prohibit the use of stun guns, tasers and even certain types of pepper spray. I think it's ridiculous to have prohibitions on pepper spray, but if you live in a county or state that doesn't allow you to have it, then getting a personal alarm is probably your best option.

If you're lucky enough to live in a city and state where you can carry pepper spray or a stun gun, then you should consider investing in one of these products to go along with the alarm.

Top 5 Reasons Why You Need a Stun Gun These Days

By Steve Thibeault

The world is not always a safe place; sometime you might have to defend yourself. For that there are a lot of options. There is the AK-47 for one. It would be very effective but not very practical. There are the martial arts. It is also effective but not available by mail. That leaves use with stun guns. Of all the options it might be the best.

First they are very legal in most states and cities. There are a few place they won't let you have one and oddly enough they are the places you might want one, like New Jersey, the City of New York (well, the whole state), and Washington, D.C. For some reason Annapolis banned them too, but most place you can carry them concealed without a permit. That a big plus because you can take it with you on vacation or business most of the time and be safe where ever you go.

Not only are they legal but they are very available. Even if there is not a store near you can go to the internet. Once there you will be able to find just what you need and the right size for your budget. Maybe you want a standard size. If you carry a large bag anyway it will only take up a little more room than a cell phone and it looks scary. Speaking of cell phone they have some that look just like cell phones. Those are great if you want to have it ready and in you hand when you walk to your car. Others are small enough to carry in a pack of cigarettes or disguised as a pen. They come as shock batons too that are great if, among other things, you fear your dog will get attacked while being walked. You can administer the shock from a safe distance. Yes, there is one for every occasion.

Another advantage stun guns have over other guns if the are non lethal. The shocks are only disrupting the voluntary muscles, involuntary muscles keep working just fine. That's great new because you can't kill yourself, or anybody else, by accident. After 10 minutes you will be fine. You still want to keep it out of reach of the kids but it is not a fatal weapon.

Because of the nature of the weapon you might not have to use it even if you are confronted. Between the crackling noise and the large arc electricity it is very intimidating. Your would-be attacker will think twice about messing with that.

Finally and most important, it is effective. Your attacker's state of mind does not come into play. It does not matter if they are sober, drunk, high, or just really mad. You are not infecting pain, you are disrupting their internal electrical system. The mind might have one idea but the body will suddenly have its own.

It hard to look at the advantages of a stun gun and not realize you need one. It is at the top of the heap of nonlethal self defense weapons. It is safe, cheap, versatile, intimidating, and effective, a perfect package.

Stun guns have been proven to be safe and effective non-lethal self defense products. If you want to get one, visit TBO-TECH Self Defense Products.

Using a Multi Function Stun Gun - Non Lethal Demolishment of Your Attacker

By Steve Thibeault

Why settle for a basic stun gun when you don't have to? When your life is in danger, you usually have a single chance alone to save yourself. Make the most out of that chance by protecting yourself with a multi function stun gun.

How Does the Multi Function Stun Gun Work?

There are two essential characteristics that make diversified function stun guns the most powerful but also the least lethal self-defense weapon you can use.

Firstly, it comes with high voltage power: a multi function gun releases 2.7 million volts per discharge. Just imagine what kind of jolt that could give to your assailant.

Secondly, a multi function stun gun also uses low ampere, which means there'd be no permanent or serious damage resulting from the release of electricity.

The Nature of Attack

The nervous system of your assailant is the primary target of the multi function stun gun. The release of electricity is backed by a high pulse frequency and causes an enormous amount of energy to hit the muscles of your ass

Once used, an enormous amount of energy blasts the muscles of your assailant. This causes the muscles to make fast, jerky, but uncontrolled and inefficient movements. All these movements cause the blood sugar in his body to fall alarmingly low because it's being converted into lactic acid. Naturally, loss of blood sugar is equivalent to energy loss, and this causes your assailant to make slower and less coordinated attacks if he still chooses to pursue you.

That, however, is just one of the effects of the multi function stun gun. While all that is happening, neurological impulses that are responsible for directing muscle movement are also being attacked. Since no direction is forthcoming, your assailant will gradually lose his balance and become mentally confused and even passive.

The severity of the effect of using your multi function stun gun will depend on how long the prongs of the gun remain in contact with your assailant. A half-second contact only causes a twinge of pain.

One to two seconds' contact will have your assailant confused and suffer uncontrollable muscle spasms. If that doesn't seem enough, you can lengthen the duration of the contact to three to five seconds. With that kind of attack, your assailant will curl up in the ground, completely immobilized.

More Features from the Stun Multi Function Gun

This advanced stun gun also comes with a LED flashlight to help you better ward off an attack. There is also a pin wrist strap to provide you a more secure grip.

Get Double the Damage With the Double Trouble Stun Gun

By Steve Thibeault

Everyone knows that a stun gun, when used effectively, can immediately disarm and even immobilize your attacker. But if you think that doesn't offer you enough protection, how about having a self-defense weapon that's akin to using two stun guns at the same time? Sounds wonderful? That's exactly what you'll get from the Double Trouble Stun Gun.

What to Get from the Double Trouble Stun Gun

To have a better idea of how this product can ensure your safety and help you fight off your attacker, you'll need to understand how its essential features works.

Two Zaps at the Same Time

This product has two discharge points, situated at each end of its U-shaped structure. These dual discharge points allow you to release a dual slap at a single instance. Think of it as a combo punch that can knock your attacker out in half a second, given the perfect aim.

Rubber Coated Housing

This self defense product is designed to stay in your hand as long as necessary. Other self-defense weapons prove to be ineffective because they keep slipping past your hold. That, however, won't happen with your Double Trouble Stun Gun thanks to its rubber-coated housing. Rubber, as we all know, provides us with a slip-proof texture for a tight, reliable grip.

Hand Straps

For better security, hand straps are also included with the Double Trouble Stun Gun. Make sure you use them, of course!

Battery-Powered

This product uses a pair of lithium batteries, which means you can enjoy longer life than what you would normally get from nickel metal hydride batteries. This would save you both time and money as it requires fewer replacements.

Safety Features

Stun guns are powerful, especially if they come with a 1.2 million voltage power like the Double Trouble Stun Gun, but also potentially dangerous to the user. Safety features are, therefore, quite necessary.

A carrying case to minimize the effects of accidental discharges and prevent accidental contact with discharge points is just the start. Safety switches and indicator lights must also be incorporated with its design. This device would not be activated unless the LED lights and safety switch are both on.

Understanding the Effects of Stun Guns

Using this product for half a second can cause slight pain and will definitely startle your attacker. Make it last a second or two more and that would cause mental confusion and muscle spasm. If it lasts three to five seconds, that would lead to mental disorientation and confusion. Now, with the Double Trouble Stun Gun, imagine having the effect doubled!

TBO-TECH Self Defense Products offers one of the more effective stun guns.

Self Defense Products - Keeping You Safe at Home

By Jack Krohn

When most folks think of self defense products they think of stun guns, pepper sprays, personal alarms, tasers etc. that are used outdoors and rightfully so. Most assaults as you probably know occur with women as the victims out in the highways and byways of the heartland-on the streets so to speak.

Millions law enforcement officers all over the world use and carry pepper spray and other non-lethal self defense items for crowd control and law enforcement. That should tell you how well they work. Postal carriers are issued a self defense spray to defend against dog attacks. How's that for an endorsement?

But how can these items be used to keep you safe at home? Here are some thoughts.

It is just a fact that more women are opting for the single lifestyle putting them more at risk for a home invasion assault or rape than ever before. There is no one else in the home, as a single adult, for you to rely on for help. So you must provide your own personal protection!

1. Self Defense Products-should be located throughout the house. Certainly a pepper spray at the front door is a must. A stun gun or taser in the kitchen is a great back up.

2. Personal Alarms-that double as door alarms. Not only will this save you some money, but also keep you safe on the streets and at home too.

3. Self Defense DVD's-will teach you the basic moves of self defense-an essential for women living alone.

Consider this as a three layered approach to keeping you safe at home. It starts with the door alarm. Then if the bad guys get in you can use your new self defense techniques to disable him or at least get him out the door. If that fails you have some self defense tools like pepper spray or stun guns available to defend yourself.

As good as your local police department is they cannot protect you at home. You must step up and assume the responsibility for your own defense.

Realistic Rehearsal in Self Defense

By Mark A Dixon

In our previous article we looked at the three stages of a street situation. From this it was we can see that most systems and styles start the defence from the physical point of the attack, but the actual fact is the confrontation starts much earlier.

It is vital that you get the part right before the part where the confrontation turns physical. If everything you train begins with the physical it is highly likely that you will wait for an attack before acting. If you are not training the part before the physical there is no way you will be able to deal with this under stress and your confidence will be shaken.

You have to work out why the confrontation has started in the first place. If you are not getting this part you are missing out on 90% of the fight and only training 10%.

Through years of research and experience we have created a step by step approach to that allows you to train the complete picture. We teach the whole 100% and not the 10% taught by most self defence or martial art schools.

Outlined below is part of our step by step approach:

Step 1 - Decide and Create the Situation

For this you could use a situation that has a really happened either to yourself or someone you know or have read about. This could be a situation where it sadly ended in a violent confrontation or just had the possibility of turning violent.

You need to examine all the factors associated with it such as the time of day, the victim's frame of mind, the aggressor's frame of mind, the reasons behind the attack, etc..

Step 2 - React Emotionally and Behaviorally

It is important that both the victim and aggressor react to the scenario not just with the way they behave, but the way they it makes them feel as well. With this it is the speed of your mind that is important and not the speed of your techniques. No one should have a predetermined idea of how the situation turns out, just let it play out based on the level the victim is able to deal with based on their level of training and exposure.

Step 3 - Work Within Verbal Guidelines

There are possible areas you may want to avoid with this type of training. If you are the victim do not use confrontational or threatening language. Very rarely will an aggressor back off when spoken to this way. Avoid commanding or saying they have done something wrong. Any of these verbal areas runs the risk of escalating the situation.

To learn more about the other areas of this system and the step by step approach visit our website here.

Applying Hand Cuffs Properly

By Adam Sisterhen

In this article I will explain the correct way to apply hand cuffs. I will also identify what not to do. After reading this you will know how to properly apply hand cuffs; with practice, only a handful of people may will be able to compromise and defeat the hand cuff.

Overview of the parts:

· The hand cuff is comprised of two halves.

· Each half has a stationary part and a rotating part.

· On each stationary part there is a keyhole and on most units, a double lock switch or button.

· The two halves are linked together by chain or a hinge.

· The key should have one side that has a flange on it and on the other side should be a pin that sticks out about a quarter of an inch, which is for the double lock mechanism.

Hand Cuff Inspection:

· Always inspect your hand cuffs prior to starting your shift.

· Inspect the handcuffs for rust, discoloration, and ground out or faulty gears.

· Run the rotating part through the stationary part. You should hear clicks.

· Inspect the key visually; the flange should be straight. Then place the key in the lock; it should slide in easily and fit tight without forcing it.

The steps to properly apply handcuffs:

· After inspection is done, you need to learn how to hold the hand cuffs to properly apply them quick and easily.

· Always (I can't stress this enough) have positive control of the person you are cuffing. It will hurt them less and be easier for you to apply the cuffs.

· You need to hold them with the rotating part open with both the keyholes pointed up towards your face, so you can see down into the keyhole. If you don't complete this step right, the assailant could pick the lock and compromise your cuffs.

· You hold the chain or hinge with your non-dominant hand. If you use your dominant hand you can lose control of the person and fumble when applying the cuffs.

· With the assailants hands behind his or hers back, you need to turn their hands so the back of the hands are touching. If you fail to do this, the assailant will have more movement of their hands giving them a better opportunity to defeat the cuffs or "slip" the cuff. Always apply one cuff at a time.

· Using your dominate hand, start on your non-dominate side and put the stationary part of the cuff on the wrist of the assailant and rotate the rotating side over the wrist; you will hear a clicking sound when inserted into the stationary side.

· Using your pinky finger, slip it in-between the cuff and the side of the person's wrist. This allows the cuff to be tight enough so they can't get out of it but lose enough that it doesn't cause unnecessary use of force and discomfort.

· Now you need to work the other side. Slide the stationary side on the wrist of the person and rotate the other side. Follow the same procedure for tightening the cuff as explained above.

· Now, while keeping positive control of the person, you need to get out your key.

· On the back side of your key, you should have a quarter inch pin that sticks out. This is for the double lock. The double lock prevents the cuff from tightening further than you originally set it.

· Using that pin, find your double lock. On most models it underneath the cuff or on the side of the cuff.

· Depending on your model, you either need to push in the button or toggle over the switch.

· Remember to always have positive control of the person.

· To remove the cuff you just simply put the key in the key hole and turn the key. It will unlock the double lock and the cuff at the same time.

Conclusion:

The key to applying hand cuffs is to have positive control of the person being hand cuffed. Helpful Hint; if standing, place your foot in between their feet; if they get rowdy you are already in position to assist them to the wall or the ground. Remember the best time to learn your lesson about personal security if before something happens.

Why the Cell Phone Stun Gun is So Popular

By Jack Krohn

There are so many choices when it comes to self defense products that it can be a little intimidating. You probably already know that self defense weapons are used by military and law enforcement agencies the world over because they are so effective.

Pepper spray is at the top of the popularity list then comes stun guns with tasers last only because they are so pricey. It should be noted that tasers are the most effective of all these self defense devices.

The purpose of a non lethal self defense item is to give you enough time to get away form a dangerous situation-not injure anyone, thus the non lethal handle. A pepper spray will get you 20-30 minutes to get away, a stun device 5-10 minutes and a taser up to 30 minutes to seek help or subdue the assailant.

In three to five seconds the 800,000 volts immobilizes him by forcing his muscles to work so fast he has no energy left. This also interrupts the tiny neurological stimulus that controls muscle movement resulting in disorientation and loss of balance.

When it comes to a stun weapon without a doubt the most popular one sold in the U.S. is the cell phone stun gun. It gives you an edge usually reserved to the assailant-that of surprise. No one will know you are carrying a non lethal weapon when you have a cell phone stun gun or a camera cell phone stun gun.

Aside from that the power and features carry the day. 800,000 volts and more depending on specific model, a disabling pin wrist strap that prevents the stun device from being used against you, an alarm, a flashlight and more features. They all combine to make the cell phone stun gun the most popular stun device there is.

Most models come with free holsters and lifetime warranties. Prices vary by manufacturer from $45-$90. Some models are even rechargeable.

Often the sight of the flying sparks and crackling sounds of a stun gun is often enough to cause a would-be attacker to back off-exactly what you want.

The Use of Personal Alarms

By Richard Armen

For the same reason that the sound of a barking dog scares burglars away, the sound of a personal alarm will scare away any criminal trying to attack you. They emit a very loud alarm, sometimes up to 130 decibels, so can create plenty of noise to scare your attacker away and alert anyone in the vicinity to your situation.

The last thing an assailant wants when they are trying to attack you is a lot of noise drawing attention to them. Depending on their motives, they may be trying to steal your purse, rape you, or push you into their getaway car, for example. Any form of resistance, including physical attacks or noise, makes their attack more difficult to complete. They are hoping to get away with their objective as quickly as possible. Did you know that most carjackings happen in fifteen seconds or less? The more time it takes, the more they are likely to be noticed, and pulling out your personal alarm just adds to your attacker's problems, making it more likely that they will run away rather than continuing their attack.

In a situation where you are being attacked, your best line of defense is to react quickly, fight back physically as much as you can, and make a lot of noise. A personal alarm is the perfect weapon to make a lot of noise- that's what it's there for. Combined with other methods of fighting back, whether strictly physical or using a stun gun or pepper spray, an alarm buys you valuable time to get away from the attacker.

The portable personal alarm can be used in hundreds of applications. Whether you're at home, at work, or traveling, it is about the size of a garage door opener, so is small enough to be easily concealed, yet loud and effective. They are cost effective, too, so you can keep them in various convenient locations around your home, plus at the office and in your car.

Anyone can use the personal alarm for self defense, no matter where they are going or what they do for a living. They are especially useful for lifeguards, neighborhood watch officers, those who enjoy jogging or exercising outside, and many others. They are also great for kids, even those who are too young for you to trust with a stun gun or pepper spray canister. Some nursing homes give alarms to their patients, not only for attacks but also medical emergencies or other situations. Many personal alarms include keychain attachments or an LED light for additional functionality.

Always carry some form of self defense product, whether you choose a stun gun, pepper spray, defense baton, personal alarm, or any other product. In fact, a personal alarm is most effective when you can follow it up with physical means for self defense. These products are inexpensive and easy to use, and very effective at stopping attacks. When it comes to your personal safety, remember that you are the one in control. Yes, the police should be called after an attack, but they likely won't be near enough to help you as it unfolds. It is up to you to stop an attack in progress using a personal alarm, stun gun, pepper spray, or any other means.

Resist Attack is your one stop shop for all of your Personal Alarm needs.

Taser Equals Non-Letha

By Karen Abby

There are more stories than ever about a TASER C2 as a self defense product. There is a lot of false information being tossed around and it is difficult to determine what is accurate and what it not.

Here are the Facts:

1. TASER is powerful, yet non-lethal self-defense weapons.

2. TASER interrupts the function of muscles and nerves through a potent current.

3. Deployment of a TASER can be from up to 30 feet away and will leave the attacker out of action because of prevailing neuro- muscular system in the body.

4. The attacker will stay out of action long enough for you to get to safety and call for help.

A growing number of people are choosing the non-lethal TASER C2 over buying a pistol or rifle, which most times are, lethal weapons. Most people don't necessarily want to kill an attacker; they simply want to get away from the attacker and let the police arrest and deal with the situation.

There are contradictory reports as to whether A TASER is lethal or not. An article from the National Post on May 7, 2008 stated that this issue was taken to court and the court ruled that there was no evidence that A TAZER C2 or any model were the cause of death or in any way a contributing factor in the deaths of at least 68 individuals that were involved in crimes. In each of these cases, a medical condition or other non related TASER situation was determined to be the cause of death.

This is very significant information, since there have been numerous times when the blame has been wrongly placed on the weapon. Of course, it is extremely important to get accurate information and training with any weapon before using it.

A training video is included with every TASER sold. If owners of this device watch the video it should cut down on unnecessary injury.

A Technology Break Through in Self Defense Weapons

By Karen Abby

There have been a lot of useful technological advancements in the past years; from the technology masterminds we have cell phones, laptops, MP3 players, etc. Undeniably, most of us indulge in the convenience and entertainment these gadgets provide. It's just saddening to think that we invest loads of money to be able to buy these things but we fail to consider other more important factors such as security.

Although I'm techie myself, having the latest mobile phone, coolest laptop and a top of the line MP3 player, I always make it a point to look in to the latest security devices.

Being a girl in this chaotic world is totally risky, that's why I own two cell phones. One is primarily for communication and the other one is a cell phone stun gun for protection from unwanted goons.

The cell phone stun gun comes in different styles and voltages. The amazing thing about these devices they have totally broken the pattern of the traditional big bulky stun guns. This small size self defense weapon allows a woman to be in control of their defenses while being totally fashionable.

When faced with an attacker the worst thing to do is loose your cool or telegraph your plan. Most assailants will see a bigger stun gun coming toward them a mile away, thus taking away the element of surprise. Or worse, the bigger stun guns can create the risk of getting caught on something inside your purse at the very moment you need it.

The cell phone stun gun is very authentic and discreet, you can walk around with it your hand and no one would even notice.

Using a cell phone stun gun is quite simple. You should hold its electrodes firmly into a muscular area of an attacker; usually the area between the arm pit and waist is optimal. If this area is not accessible as an alternative, the shoulders, thighs or buttocks can be stunned.

These devices are designed so if you are stunning someone, you will not feel any shock coming from it. To completely take away the ability of an attacker to move, you should apply it on the attacker for 15 to 20 seconds. With this the attacker becomes immobile for some time. Note, you need more time if your voltage is low or if your attacker is big.

You never know when someone will attack you. More over I keep in mind that these assailants may not be after me but more interested in my cool gadgets and other material possessions.

It May Be a Runt But it Is Very Stunning

TASER C2 - Get the Most From a Self Defense Product

By Karen Abby

These days, even in the quietest of locations and even in broad daylight, there are a upsetting number of personal attacks taking place, many without rhyme or motive.

For instance, take the case of a sixty year old man in average health walking down a California street around 4:00 P.M. He was using a can for balance returning home from a get-together. Out of nowhere, suddenly he was jumped from behind by two young women and a young man trying to hold him up. He had the habit of carrying a couple of dollars in his pockets, but his real money was inside his socks, which were, of course, inside his shoes. He emptied his pockets and gave up the two dollars and some coins, but still ended up with a slash in his forehead from his cane that the young man grabbed and hit him with.

Let us look at this situation again and see what would have happened if the man had a TASER C2. Had he been walking and carrying it in his hand, especially with the convenient holster, he could have grabbed it and used it to at least eliminate one of his attackers by immobilizing them. That would have certainly distracted the other two long enough for the TASER C2 to be used on at least one of them or, simply for the man to get far enough away to get help.

There are more and more attacks on fully active streets whether at night or during the day. The time of day does not seem to matter; however, it is important to have a reliable and convenient means of protection so that you do not become a statistic.

In the case above, the man ended up getting first aid and everything turned out all right for him, this time. Luckily, he suffered no lasting injuries. He also kept his real money and only lost the two dollars and change. However, this attack has altered his life and lifestyle. He was no longer comfortable taking walks, so he began taking the bus or calling a cab.

The TASER C2 will help you to feel and be safe no matter where you are, day or night. It comes in several colors, black, blue, red, silver and pink. One of the best self protection electronic control devices is the TASER C2; its goal is to protect you. With this kind of special protection you have that extra bit of safe feelings. Do not become a statistic. Get your TASER C2 device today.

This Information Helped Me Choose the Best Pepper Spray and They Will Work For You Too

By Karen Abby

Not too long ago when you would hear about pepper spray, it had to do with the police using it on inmates in a prison or the military using it on the enemy, but you did not hear much about private citizens using defense spray.

More recently, we started hearing about the use of self defense spray, often by a store or gas station owner, especially the ones who are open 24 hours per day and had only one person working over night and into the morning. This was a way to give these employees a source of protection against theft or assault.

Today, it is easier to locate mase spray. It is widely available, more so than it was a few years ago. That is good news for people who want a way to protect themselves from attack. Considering this advance, how can you decide what is the best pepper spray?

There are countless types of mase and defense spray offered, and some of the containers are quite unique. Instead of the old pepper spray can, some of the best pepper spray comes contained inside fake pagers that look real, phony ball point pens, bogus lipstick cases and more. These designs can make it simple for an individual to carry discreetly and keep ready for use.

Self defense sprays are categorized as non-lethal weapons that are efficient at deterring aggressors due to its immediate effects. Its effectiveness can be attributed from its main ingredient oleoresin capsicum, also known as OC, which comes from Chile peppers.

Find below some noted benefits of OC spray:

A one second squirt of pepperspray to the face can cause temporary blindness and profuse stream of tears.

A couple more sprays will render an attacker helpless instantly for a period of 10-15 minutes, providing you enough time to flee and seek assistance.
It can cause sneezing, coughing and difficulty of breathing, bringing down the attacker to his knees.
It can be used as a bear spray or dog spray if these animals become dangerous.
Pepperspray has no long-term damage; safe alternative to guns.

When May You Need To Use OC Or Mase Spray?

For instance, let us say that you are going to the ATM machine at dusk on a street that has very few people out and about. If a would-be attacker came up behind you and you were holding a pen, pager or lipstick case filled with oc spray, this could mean the difference between you spraying and disorienting them (giving you time to get away) and being trapped, robbed and/or attacked by the assailant.

To determine which the best choice for you, it is important to research and compare facts and information on the pepper sprays on the market. The best advice to help you choose, pick a pepper spray that meets your needs and budget. Most of all check the return policies and guarantees offered.

Important Self Defense Tips

By Xavier Tico

So you've taken a few karate lessons, maybe you've got a colored belt. I'm sorry to break this to you, but if you are attacked on the street, your attacker isn't going to press his palms together and bow politely before he makes his move.

Martial artists adhere to a code of honor that has not caught on with the criminal population. A typical drunken or doped up thug will try to surprise you if he can. From behind if he can. With something so scary or force so overwhelming you won't think about resisting. He's not looking for a fair fight, or any fight at all. He's after your money, your jewelry, your car, your dignity, or all the above.

Your ability to defend yourself from a street attack will not depend on your knowledge of slick martial arts moves as much as it will on your determination to act quickly and forcefully to end the attack and escape.

This is not to say that Jet Li has much to fear in a dark alley. He doesn't. But you're not Jet Li and never will be. You will have to rely on intelligence, determination, and when possible, the advantage a small, non-lethal self defense product can provide.

Here is a run down of the most practical means for non-lethal self defense you have available to you.

First, you can just run away. Happily, drunks and junkies are, as a rule, not overly swift of foot. Removing yourself from a dangerous situation is often the safest thing you can do. If you are confronted by a hostile jerk, he has probably already decided how and when he is going to go after you. You are at a disadvantage right from the start. If you see an opportunity to skoot, skoot.

Ok, you're not a track star either. Try distraction. Do the unexpected. Cause a scene. Scream at him, or about him, or at some passers by. Break something that will attract a lot of attention. The distraction may give you time to go back to plan A and get out of there.

That didn't work? You're trapped in a small space. The jerk is between you and the only exit. He's actually grabbed you?

Now is not the time to be trying to remember your last karate lesson. Whether you have a keychain weapon or not, the eyes, nose, throat, solar plexus and groin offer the best opportunities to inflict enough pain to cover a get-a-way.

We'll work from the top down for no particular reason. The most important thing to remember is not to hold back. Give it all you've got. Don't hesitate. The targets we’re talking about are the most vulnerable whether you have a weapon at hand or not.

The two finger poke to the eyes was not only hilarious when Moe, Larry and Curly did it, well struck, your attacker's tighly shut eyes will give you plenty of time to make your exit.

A fist, or the heel of your hand, or your forehead, or any handy striking weapon applied forcefully to the tip of the nose will cause great pain and close the eyes of the recipient quickly.

So will a blow to the throat. The tips of your fingers, a fist, an elbow, or any form of kubaton will serve the purpose admirably. The thug's breathing difficulties, and he will have them after being hit hard on the Adams apple, can only work to your advantage. Once again, don't hold back.

One of the down sides to a lot of karate practice is that punches are often stopped or pulled. Bad habit. Punch as though your target was a foot behind where it actually is. Get your body weight into it.

Another vulnerable spot is called the solar plexus. It is a bundle of nerves just below the breastbone. A strong blow to it, from fist, elbow, knee or what have you will collapse most people instantly.

And, of course, the ever popular groin kick, when well landed, will rarely fail to give you time for a hasty departure. It is impossible to say this too often. Give it all you've got. Don’t hold back.

You can increase your chances of a successful escape by carrying a simple self defense weapon. Kubatons and other small keychain striking and cutting weapons will greatly increase the effectiveness of any blow you deliver. Leather saps, small folding batons and similar striking weapons can make even the smallest person a formidable opponent. Your targets remain the same.

Pepper spray and stun guns are the next step up, offering the ability to thoroughly disable an attacker quickly and in the case of pepper spray, at a distance. If you decide to carry these weapons, once again, your determination to use them, your lack of hesitation and mental attitude is as important as having them at hand.

If you carry pepper spray, or a stun gun, or a keychain weapon, know how they work and how to use them. Have the weapon ready in your hand when you are in vulnerable situations. Entering and leaving vehicles or buildings are particularly dangerous times. Carrying packages and fumbling for your keys make you doubly open to attack. Look around you. Don't be surprised. Be ready.

If you are attacked, hesitation will only benefit your attacker. Drop your purse. Drop the groceries. Keep your eyes on the threat. Strike hard and fast until the threat is no longer in sight. Put a safe distance between you and your attacker as quickly as possible. Call the cops.

Mental preparedness is the most critical factor in effective self defense. An air of confidence and decisiveness will even make you less likely to be attacked in the first place.

Staying Safe With Keychain Weapons

By Xavier Tico

When you are out on the streets there are circumstances that are more dangerous than others, times when you should be alert to what is going on around you. A good example is when you have reached your parked car and are fumbling with the keys to open the door. This is a time when thugs and muggers often strike.

You are focused on getting the key in the door. You may be carrying packages. You are generally not looking around and could be in serious danger from someone coming up quickly behind you.

A similar circumstance is when you have arrived at the front door of your home. Arriving home is always a relief, a time when you are less likely to be aware of possible danger. And once again you may be carrying packages and fumbling with keys. Always stay alert to what is happening around you until you are safely inside your home or car.

You needn't be a paranoid wreck to simply maintain awareness of your surroundings. Mental preparedness is 90% of surviving a criminal encounter.

When going from a car to a building or vice versa security experts recommend looking around. Carrying a keychain weapon is a good idea if you have thought about and practiced using it.

There are many handy weapons that you can carry on your key chain. Pepper spray, a small stun gun, many forms of small martial arts weapons called kubatons, and small cutting tool can provide you with the means to fight off an attacker long enough for you to make a safe escape.

Even your keys themselves can be a useful weapon in the right circumstances. But what is most important is that you be ready to use what you have at hand to defend yourself if you must.

If you carry a keychain weapon, carry it ready to use when walking between buildings and vehicles. If you are attacked or grabbed from behind, swing around with your weapon forcefully and quickly. Hesitation is your enemy as much as the thug.

If you are using a stabbing or striking weapon you must strike with sufficient force to cause enough pain and damage to allow you to escape. Let go of your purse! Drop the packages! They're not worth getting hurt over.

Pepper spray and stun guns have the advantage of being able to completely disable your attacker without causing permanent injury. And pepper spray offers the added advantage of range. Keychain sprays can be used at up to 20 feet.

But no self defense device will help you if you are not ready and willing to use it. Stay alert. Carry whatever self defense product you choose so that it is ready to use instantly in those situations that are most dangerous. And above all, cultivate an attitude of survival and willingness to defend yourself. A confident look of mental and physical preparedness and will often be enough to keep you out of dangerous encounters.

Refuse to Be a Victim With Self Defense Products

By Jack Krohn

Is there still doubt in your mind about how dangerous our world is? It doesn't matter how old you are or where you live. Especially if you are a woman you are a target for an assault, robbery, date rape, domestic violence or worse. It isn't even a question of if it will happen but when.

Women are targets by a 9 to one margin over men. Convinced yet? Muggings, assaults, robberies, home invasions, rapes, homicides are a part of our lives. We hear about these crimes on TV and radio. Not only do they strike fear into your heart but the constant bad news is depressing-really depressing.

If you are tired of being afraid to go for a walk or a run or bike ride in your own backyard. If you fear being assaulted or robbed or carjacked; if you are afraid of being the next home invasion or home burglary victim or if you live in fear of being attacked by dogs when you walk-stop! Stop living in fear and refuse to be a victim.

You can rebuild your confidence by gaining knowledge in basic self defense techniques by getting a self defense DVD. This will show you the basics as a foundation then add as you gain self confidence. Then step two is to get some self defense products like stun guns, pepper sprays etc.

Then step three and maybe the most important. Learn how to use them and practice using them so when the time comes you react instead of hesitating. Seconds can be deadly-to you.

Unfortunately we all can become a victim - all it takes for the bad guy is the right opportunity. Arm yourself with the right self defense products so you can feel more confident walking down the street, going to a park, sleeping in your home, or driving a car.

Remember too that the purpose of self defense tools like this to give you time to seek safety, help or just get away form a dangerous situation. They all do that in spades.

Chances are if you are reading this that crime has touched your life in some way or you consider yourself at risk. Take the next step and do something to protect yourself! Your life and safety is worth far more than the cost of a stun gun or pepper spray.

If you are in the market for a self defense product look for quality, effectiveness, and a biggie-LEGALITY. Stun guns are not legal in some states. Check with your local police department first before you get one.

How to Use a Self Defense Baton

How to Use a Self Defense Baton

How to Use a Self Defense Baton
By Richard Armen

If you are looking for a self defense product but want something that's a little more hands-on than pepper spray or a stun gun, take a look at self defense batons. A baton is a good choice for those with the physical strength to use it effectively, but they're not for everyone.

In its most basic form, a baton is a blunt stick suitable for close range self defense. Many are telescoping or collapsible so that they can easily be carried with you. They are designed to be carried in a bag or in a pouch connected to your belt; some even come with a belt loop attachment. A fully extended baton allows you to maintain a little more distance from your attacker than if you were unarmed or were carrying a device such as a stun gun for self defense.

Steel batons pack a surprising punch when used against an attacker, but they are much less useful if you pull out your baton only to wonder how, exactly, you are supposed to use it. It does take some knowledge and skill to use a baton correctly. If you've never used a baton for self defense before, you may want to purchase a self defense video to train yourself in its use.

Batons have various uses, from using the baton like a stick to hit your assailant, to stabilizing your first for other physical attacks, to gaining leverage on an assailant's fingers or wrist, particularly when they are trying to grab you. A self defense baton can also be used to apply pressure to sensitive parts of the body. Batons can be quite effective even with simple moves; you don't have to know how to spin the baton around your body or anything fancy like that to be able to use a self defense baton effectively against your attacker.

To use a defense baton, first pull it out of the holster or bag. Make sure that you have a good grip on the handle. Then, flick your wrist to extend the baton to its full length. Now, use it to whack your attacker in the ribs, the kneecap, or the neck. A baton evens the field when you're faced with an attacker who may be bigger or stronger than you are, but your approach must be confident when you're in this threatening situation. You can't poke lightly, but must put your strength, no matter how strong you are, into each move.

A self defense baton can even be useful without ever having to touch your attacker. The impressive appearance of a baton can scare away a potential assailant without you needing to use it. Batons are often carried on the belts of law enforcement officials and security guards as part of their defense arsenal. Even if you never have to pull out the baton, it has done its duty in preventing attacks simply by being visible. A telescoping baton is also an effective self defense tool for use against animal attacks. If you are confident in your strength, batons can be useful as a more hands-on method of defending yourself.

Stun Guns For Non Lethal Self Defense

Stun Guns For Non Lethal Self Defense

Stun Guns For Non Lethal Self Defense
By Dan Jacober

A Stun Gun is a legal electronic device that puts out a high voltage shock. By merely touching a person with the stun device, he is immobilized for several minutes, with no permanent damage. (Stun guns do not fire barbed probes on wires like Tasers or Tazers do).

The energy stored in the stun device is dumped into the muscles at a pulse frequency rate that tells the muscles to do a great deal of work rapidly. This rapid work cycle instantly depletes the attacker's blood sugar by converting it to lactic acid. In short, he is unable to produce energy for his muscles, and his body becomes unable to function

The Stun Gun does not rely on high amperage, or pain, for results. Itis designed to key into the nervous system. It interrupts the tiny neurological impulses that travel through the whole body to control and direct voluntary muscle movement. When the assailant's neuromuscular system is overwhelmed and controlled by the stun gun, instant disorientation and loss of balance will result.

Should the assailant be touching you, the current will not pass to your body! They are a great personal protection device, but you should always be aware that these devices are not toys, and should not be treated as such.

In choosing a stun gun the most important factor is that higher voltage means faster immobilization. This means raw stopping power. Higher voltage also means the current can pass through more layers of clothing and still get the job done. If you test fire a high voltage stun gun (anything above 800,000 volts), the electrical current running between the test prongs creates a bright lightning bolt. The loud, crackling sound is unmistakable and is often enough to send a would-be attacker running in the other direction. However, if the bad guy keeps on coming, you are holding serious stopping power in your hand.

These devices are a very effective non lethal self defense option. There are many models of on the market. Some even resemble cell phones and some even are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.

Regardless of the model you choose, if you don't carry it with you it can't help protect you. It is also very important that you practice with your stun gun to become efficient with it.

Keep Personal Security Products With You at All Times

Keep Personal Security Products With You at All Times

Keep Personal Security Products With You at All Times
By Steve Thibeault

Every time we go out we have to watch out for ourselves. Unfortunately this is more applicable than ever as we face difficult economic times and the more vulnerable amongst us, including elderly, children and ladies really have to watch out. Some people find that they are forced to turn to crime just to survive these days and you don't want to become a victim of this situation. Arm yourself with good personal security products.

The security industry has really come to our aid in recent years. A wide variety of personal security products are available to help you fight back. Whilst nobody likes any kind of confrontation, we do need to be prepared.

In the United States it is perfectly legal, given certain circumstances, to arm yourself with a potentially lethal weapon for your protection. This is often not necessary as a number of the crimes committed on the street are just crimes of opportunity and not preplanned. In this case, you should arm yourself with one of the many nonlethal products available.

One of the most popular personal security products today is the pepper spray. This is so compact it can be carried anywhere, in your pocket or at the top of a purse. An attacker will be stopped in his tracks when you spray the chili pepper towards his eyes, The effects are so painful and debilitating that he will not proceed.

If you live in an area that is prone to crime and attacks on the person, you may choose to carry a stun gun. Be careful, as this is not legal in all jurisdictions, but it is very effective. You do not necessarily have to engage the criminal, as you can fire the gun, if you need to, from a reasonable distance.

Sometimes a deterrent is adequate enough. If you show a would-be attacker that you have a stun gun or a pepper spray in your hand, this could be enough to send him the other way. Unless he is desperate, he will not want to mess with these!

You should always try to avoid a potentially dangerous situation, but often our hectic lives dictate that we make ourselves more vulnerable. How often have you found yourself walking through a parking garage, looking for your car, at night? Be sure you are prepared in all circumstances by carrying a personal security product with you.

Crimes against the person are spiraling out of control and we all need to research and buy personal security products for our defense. As we go about our lives in this increasingly dangerous world, make sure that all members of your family are protected.

TBO-TECH has a wide variety of personal security products available to the public. There you will find expert information on many different options.

Self Defense Frequently Asked Questions

Self Defense Frequently Asked Questions

Self Defense Frequently Asked Questions
By Adam Sisterhen

Do you have to practice in a formal training center?

· No, you may practice on your own, especially if you had proper training. However training with a partner and under guidance is far superior because it's easier to simulate real life experiences and an instructor assures that you are using proper technique.

Do I have to practice a lot to be effective?

· This is a twofold answer. Yes you have to practice regularly to effectively learn the techniques and skills until they are instinctual. Once you have honed your skills and techniques, training a two or three times a month to maintain them is fine. If you feel your skills or techniques are diminishing, be sure to train more frequently.

How fit do I have to be in order to take self defense training?

· It depends on the particular place and type of classes they offer. Most self defense classes contain a high to moderate level of activity. However, anyone can train in self defense; you just have to take it at your own pace. Self defense classes are non- competitive. The more physically fit you are the easier the training will be. You will find that self defense training not only teaches you the skills and techniques you need against attackers, it also improvers your overall health through physical and mental training.

Will I get injured attending a self defense class?

· Safety is always the highest priority in most self defense classes, however, accidents can happen. With proper stretching, warms ups and instruction injuries are avoidable. Self defense training is physical and with any physical activity, both injury and pain can occur.

What do I wear to self Defense training classes?

· Typical work-out clothes are best to wear to self defense classes since most aren't formal martial art facilities. Once you become a regular attendee, some facilities may ask that you purchase one of their association T-shirts.

How long will it take to gain a good knowledge of self defense?

· In a good self defense class, you will gain knowledge that is useful on your very first class. Why? Because self defense training isn't just physical training it is also learning to be vigilant, what to look for, how to talk to an attacker, and what to do and not to do, to name a few.

In Summary, there are many questions asked about self defense, I have answered some of the most frequently asked questions I receive. Remember the best time to learn your lesson about personal security and self defense is before something happens.

The Difference Between Pepper Spray and Mace

The Difference Between Pepper Spray and Mace

The Difference Between Pepper Spray and Mace
By Tom Enhausen

Are you looking for a self defense mechanism? Are you wondering if you should buy mace or pepper spray and what's the difference anyway? Often people think mace and pepper sprays are the same thing. Though similar, they are not identical and produce different effects for different situations. This is an important decision that shouldn't be taken lightly, to say the least.

The physical effects of pepper spray are as follows:

- When applied the eyes, pepper spray causes immediate involuntary shutting of the eyes, tearing and an intense burning sensation. People wearing protective eye gear, contacts, or sunglasses will still be affected as well. The initial incapacitating effect usually last ten to fifteen minutes, but the eyes will remain irritated for thirty to sixty minutes.

- Pepper spray also effects the respiratory system. When exposed, it causes immediate inflation. Your attacker's throat will swell, causing breathing to be difficult. This effect lasts between ten and thirty minutes. The airway will be open enough for them to survive, but they'll find it extremely difficult to even walk.

- Pepper spray may cause cases of uncontrollable coughing and gagging. This is due to the constriction of the throat and larynx, and generally lasts ten to fifteen minutes.

The physical effects of mace are:

- Prolonged burning sensation on the affected area.

- Increased nasal discharge

- headache, dizziness, and general discomfort

So now you know the differences between both, and can make a better decision when choosing between mace or pepper spray. Remember, when carrying mace or pepper spray always follow all proper safety precautions.

What Are Stun Batons?

By Tim Frazier

We live in a dangerous world and for protection, stun batons are some of the most reliable and efficient methods of self protection on the market. They are ideal for women who want personal protection when walking or shopping at night. For men who fear a criminal might try and break into their home or for security guards looking for a non lethal way of handling thieves and robbers.

Before making a purchase you probably want to know, what are stun batons? Stun batons are hand held, portable devices that can be worn on the body or carried in a bag, ready to use when needed. When touched to someone's body, stun batons provides a high voltage electrical shock to a person, scrambling their bodies electrical system, causing pain and incapacitating them. When shocked, individuals will have trouble coordinating their muscles, lose their balance and may be temporarily paralyzed, making it easier to get away or to capture the criminal.

Though high voltage the ampage is low, meaning the attacker will not suffer permanent damage. Police officers often use stun batons because they work well when dealing with criminals in hand to hand combat, making them safer than guns and other weapons for the officer and help to quickly get a situation under control.

Thankfully, for those who don't have time to specifically target a part of the attacker's body, stun batons work on any area of the body and can even penetrate through clothing. Many attackers are under the influence of drugs or alcohol when they decide to make an assault. Since stun batons work on the muscles, they will still incapacitate someone who is under the influence. For those who are being attacked by several assailants at once, a fully charged set of batteries can give of dozens of shots. To ensure your stun baton is always ready when needed, the use of high quality 9-volt batteries is essential.

Your stun baton can even protect against assailants you might not be expecting. In larger cities and rural areas stun batons are increasingly being used to offer protection against out of control animals, it will work on rabid or aggressive dogs and other animals of similar size.

Operating a stun baton is a simple process that anyone can do. Simply attach the stun baton to your body for instant access. This can be done using a belt loop or a nylon holster, the nylon holster is preferred since it offers faster access in an emergency. Then simply grab the rubber handle and touch the other end to the assailant while pulling the trigger. Though the stun baton will work on any part of the body, the torso is ideal. Simply place against the torso and hold for 3 to 5 seconds.

The stun baton is designed so your assailant will not be able to grab it from you, if they grab the baton six inches from the tip, another shock will be send out. The wrist strap allows you to easily carry your baton in your hand if you sense danger is near or are traveling in an unsafe neighborhood.

When used correctly stun batons can save your life or family members. They are also affordable and safe to carry. With a stun baton by your side you can walk anywhere with ease.

Stun Guns: How They Work

By Michelle C Roebuck

Before I talk about stun guns and how they work, I want to tell you what they are. A stun gun is a small, electrically-charged non-lethal weapon. It usually is powered by a 9 volt battery and can be the size of a flashlight. You can buy a stun gun ranging from 50,000 volts to 1 million volts.

When you place the device on an attacker and push the trigger, the two prongs on the end of the stun gun give off a strong electrical current that goes into the attacker's body. Clothes are not a barrier to the electrical current.

The best places to stun an attacker are the hips, shoulders and rib cage. Another good place is the torso. By stunning the torso, the shock will affect the whole body.

When the electrical current passes through the body, the attacker will become immobilized. It will cause the body to feel intense pain and the attacker will have complete loss of muscle control. He can have spasms, become off balance or fall to the ground and become disoriented.

Even after all of this, the weapon won't cause serious or permanent injury if the person doesn't have a medical condition. The device does not affect vital organs like the heart.

The affects of the shock can last for several minutes depending on how long you use the weapon on him. So after you use it, run to safety and call the police. 3-5 seconds is long enough to immobilize him for quite some time.

Stun guns are restricted in: Illinois, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Wisconsin.

The cities of: Annapolis MD, Baltimore MD, Denison IA, Disctrict of Columbia, and Philadelphia have restrictions also.

The above lists are NOT all inclusive of areas that restrict stun guns. Again, check your local area for the current laws regarding self defense weapons.

Mace Vs Pepper Spray - What is the Difference?

By Steven Phoenix

There is a common misconception that the name Mace is a type of defense spray. Mace is actually a registered brand name for a company that sells defensive pepper sprays. When Mace (legally known as Mace Security International) was first developed, it consisted of CS and CN type riot control gases that were used by the military, re-formulated to be used by police departments and civilians for personal defense. They have since change the types of sprays that they carry and include regular pepper spray and a product with pepper spray and some CS and CN mixed in. This is primarily due to the fact that CS and CN are irritants and pepper spray is an inflammatory.

What that means to you is, as an irritant, CS and CN can take longer to enter the pores and start working. CS and CN can also have their effects "washed", by removing the irritant from your skin, you loose the effect. Also, people have different levels of pain management. So what might irritate one person dramatically, may not effect another as severely. This can lead to different effects from your spray, and possibly not disabling an attacker.

OC Pepper spray is an inflammatory agent which enters the pores and causes an inflammation of the tissue. It can't be "washed" once is enters the pores, as an irritant can, which allows it to continue to work. When an individual has an inflammation of mucus tissue, they get the "feeling" of suffocation along with the burning of the pepper. There is no pain management involved.

Some brands ( Sabre and Mace are a few ) have many different types of products in their sales line. They carry products that only contain pepper spray and also some that use a bit of CS and CN in them to get a more volatile mix. Some also ad dye to identify an attacker later.

The delivery method will dictate the speed in which an spray works. The finer the particles, the faster it enters the pores. This is a double edged sword. A stream has a longer effective reach but takes longer to work, a fogger is finer and works faster, but will not travel as far and can be effected by the softest breeze (in a house this is best to just spray into the hallway and stop any movement down the hall). Some companies even produce a "foam" type spray that is difficult to wipe away and results in the pepper being ground into the pores of the skin. These types of sprays are very effective in a windy environment or possibly in a store or office area where you would not want to risk spraying a bystander.

Many animal sprays (Bear and Dog/K9) have slight differences in the mixture, but are basically the same ingredients as pepper sprays, they just have the requirement of being certified by the EPA as safe for the environment.âEUR¨âEUR¨

Remember that when using anything for self defense, other than items that are designed for self defense, you may have to defend yourself in court at to why you chose that particular item. If it is an item that you KNOW might kill or maim, you may be held negligent by a jury of your peers. Pepper Sprays have consistently been approved and held up in court at non-lethal self defense.

A Short History of Pepper Spray

By Steven Phoenix

The pepper spray that you know today has a long history dating back long ago into ancient chinese dynasties as well as other Asian cultures. Of course our modern day pepper spray isn't quite the same as olden days, but the two are still quite similar.

The first documented use of peppers as a weapon of self defense is in China and India. Chinese warriors would wrap ground up peppers in rice paper and toss it into the face of their antagonizers to disorient and disarm them temporarily. Ninja's even used this as a way to disable their opponents! Maybe that's where they get the stories of ninja's disappearing; when you've got peppers in your eyes, I highly doubt you'd see a ninja scurry away!

The first uses of pepper spray in policing were in the Tukagawa empire of Japan. Japanese police officers would keep ground pepper in a box and when people were found guilty, they'd be tortured by having it blown in their faces. This weapon was called "metsubishi" (not to be confused with the popular brand of car).

The use of pepper spray as a modern day tool of self defense didn't come about until the 1980's, when it was legalized for use not first by police officers, but by US Post Office workers. Police officers actually didn't use the substance until later into the 1980's and early 1990's. The FBI being one of the first agencies to use it, followed closely by the New York Police Department. It has gone through a lot of changes since ancient China and has become much more regulated since then.

Ancient Use of Pepper Spray For Self Defense

By Bryan Hough

Did you know that using the spiciness of peppers for self-defense actually dates back centuries? Although modern aerosol cans of pepper spray were developed only in the past several decades, using peppers for self-defense actually dates as far back as ancient Japan, China, and India.

Ground up cayenne peppers was often used to blind one's enemies and immobilize attackers. In these cultures, this use of peppers was seen as acceptable for self defense because the peppers cause no lasting harm. In other ancient communities, such as in Japan, a box of chili powder was often blown into the eyes of someone convicted of a crime.

Modern pepper spray could not develop from these ideas until the invention of the aerosol spray can. This provided the first effective method for propelling the pepper towards the person. The first successful aerosol-based spray cans were developed in the 1940s, although the first pepper sprays to use this delivery method were not developed until the 1960's and early 1970's.

These modern forms also isolated the chemical in peppers that makes them burn, resulting in a stronger formula. This capsaicin itself is a much stronger method than the whole pepper. Japanese chemists first isolated it in 1961. Today, many pepper sprays contain the substance oleoresin capsicum, which is what makes peppers hot.

To make the pepper-derived powder into a spray, the chemicals are first suspended in an oil or liquid base. Then this substance is pressurized in spray cans. The first modern, aerosol-based pepper sprays first came to market in 1969, although these early versions were intended only for military and police uses or for use against animal attacks. The first civilians to own and use this form of self defense were mainly hunters, outdoorsmen, and others who were likely to use this spray when face to face with wild animals.

United States Postal Service mail carriers began carrying pepper spray in the 1980's in case pet dogs attacked them. Both the FBI and the NYPD adopted pepper spray as part of their weapon arsenal by the early 1990s, and it was soon carried by law enforcement agencies across the world as a safe, non-lethal alternative to other weapons. As pepper spray became more common for law enforcement, it also began to be marketed for civilian use, as a self-defense weapon to carry in a purse or pocket.

Today, many pepper sprays contain chemicals developed specifically for this purpose, rather than those derived from peppers. Chloracetophenone (CN) and Orthochlorobenzalmalonitrile (CS) is the most common; these are usually much hotter than the oleoresin capsicum derived directly from peppers. Today it is carried by law enforcement agencies, hunters, joggers, and anyone else in need of an easy-to-use self defense method.

Stun Batons - What You Need to Know!

By Matthew Batcho

So after searching online for a good self defense weapon, you finally came to the realization that stun guns and pepper spray were not your style.

While searching however you came across a wonderful little toy you know fits you perfectly; stun batons.

Stun batons are becoming more and more popular. Think about it, would you rather have a 4 inch stun gun or a 2 foot stun baton? I am pretty sure you would choose the latter.

I have several different self defense weapons in my home and the one I always reach for when I hear that crazy 2 am noise is the good ol' fashioned stun baton.

Another thing I think you should know is the wide variety of stun batons there are on the market. There are some that extend longer than others and then there are ones that produce a bigger jolt.

When picking your weapon make sure you pick something that is good for you. You want the right fit if you will. The one thing you want to avoid is being sold stun batons or self defense weapons that don't fit your needs. Make sure you do a little research before making some crazy purchases. I just really don't want your wife or husband e-mailing me about a $5,000 stun baton they bought because I told them to do so. Just giving you a heads up.

The last thing we can chat about is the price. The price ranges anywhere from $50.00 all the way up into the $100's. I'm sure you have heard this a million times but you get what you pay for. Spend a little and get a little, spend a lot and get a lot. Blah blah blah.

So, with all that information above you should now have an idea as to what your looking for and what you will need. Keep in mind that the reason you read this was because you want and need to feel safe.

Well make sure you keep safe and remember, if your gonna go out and get a weapon, don't get something stupid, get those stun batons.

I know this may sound really crazy but I just found out some surprisingly "secret" information I know you are gonna love. Yes it is about stun batons but who cares, since your reading this your curious anyway. You know what to do. Crazy stun batons!

Ohh yeah when your checking out those CRAZY stun batons make sure you check the rest of the crap out too. Its all good stuff why would I tell you otherwise.

Ahh what are you still doing here? Stun batons anyone?

Top 5 Personal Security Tips

By Dr Mark Yates

This top 5 personal security tips article highlights 5 strategies of observation, body language, self protection, access control and physical security used by special forces and professional bodyguards world-wide which can be incorporated into your everyday personal protection and safety plan. These security tips will benefit individual male and females and their children. They are also useful for any one running a business employing staff.

To understand the concept of personal security is to live your life free from most of the daily security concerns that many people have to contend with. The highest percentage of people amble through their lives in what security experts call Condition White. My top 5 personal security tips should elevate you through the security colour code system and place you in a position to minimise the security risks to you, your family and your business partners and associates.

Top 5 personal security tips #1- Observation.

The very best security specialists are professionally trained bodyguards. I'm not talking about muscle bound knuckle draggers who eke out a living ensuring the safety of night club revelers. I'm talking about professional bodyguards who have been highly trained in close protection skills specifically designed to protect high income generating VIP's.

I have been training professional close protection officers internationally for close to 20 years. The very first lesson I deliver, is in observation skills, followed by further specialised classes in observation. Whether we like to admit it or not, human beings are predators. Predators by definition have great observation skills. As the human race has evolved from club wielding cavemen into a generally more peaceful existence, most human beings have never really utilised their observation skills beyond normal day to day usage.

Developing and maintaining good observation skills is key to improving your personal security. Once you learn to observe what is happening around you, you will be able to implement suitable counter measures to avoid dangerous security risks.

Top 5 personal security tips #2- Body Language

International security and intelligence forces have been training their covert operatives for many years in the science of body language. Unlike most sciences, body language is still considered unconventional in many academic circles. From a physical protection perspective understanding body language is akin to having a get out of jail card. When utilised with advanced observation skills recognising key aspects of a potential attacker's body language can give you a definite edge in any dangerous encounter. There are many books and training films available on body language.

Top 5 personal security tips #3- Self Protection

As descendants of dinosaur hunting predators we all have a self protection gene buried somewhere deep inside us. Our brain and body are finely tuned to elements of danger. The problem is most of us fail to realise we posses this very valuable attribute. Self protection can be explained by the mention of the phrase gut feeling. Whenever you meet someone who you feel uncomfortable being close to, you would mention to a friend that you had a gut feeling about that person. It's the same when you are walking in a strange area and you get a gut feeling that something isn't quite right, so you turn around. This is your self protection 'gut feeling' in action. Scientists often refer to this concept as the fight or flight syndrome.

Nine times out of ten your gut feeling is right so don't ignore this self protection personal security tip.

Top 5 personal security tips #4- Access Control

Every security expert worth their salt will inform you that the highest percentage of security problems are defeated by maintaining good access control systems. In relation to the top 5 personal security tips access control means minimising access to anyone or anything that may harm you or your loved ones. For example. You are a female who strikes up a conversation with a male co-worker. This man misreads your initial friendship and stalks you. You must immediately implement stringent access control measures. This person may not even realise he is stalking you, however stalkers crave one thing above all else, control. To gain control over you he has to have access to you. Your aim should be to implement counter stalking strategies to minimise and then eradicate his access control. In no circumstances should you continue talking to this person, in person, by telephone, text, e-mail, letters etc.

Top 5 personal security tips #5- Physical Security

I've trained special forces and close protection officers in 42 different countries across four continents. One thing that sets these people up above their peers in other military and security agencies is their advanced levels of confidence. The reason for this confidence which many opponents foolishly mistake for arrogance is their advanced levels of specialised training. A good percentage of this training focuses on their own physical security. Participating in any of the martial arts will increase your levels of confidence by default. A confident person who has participated in physical security training will often present as a hard target to would be attackers. Most attackers are cowards who seek softer targets.

Although every security expert will inform you there is no such concept as 100% security, utilising my top 5 personal security tips will increase your personal security awareness and reduce the likelihood of you being targeted for attack.

New Stun Gun Can Deliver Three Shocks Before Reloading

By Marjorie LaPiere

Taser stun guns are used by over 14,200 law enforcement agencies throughout the United States (Taser International of Fountain Hills Arizona's own figures).

All previous stun guns made by Stun Master, Talon, Z-Force and Taser have to be reloaded after one shot which can be a problem for anyone who has missed a target or has more than one attacker to subdue. That is until Taser developed the multi stun, stun gun.

Other than being able to shock three persons without reloading the stun gun, it's still uses high voltage and amperage to temporarily disable an attacker for several minutes just like the other stun guns.

As with the other devices, the energy stored in the gun is dumped into the attacker's muscles causing them to do a great deal of work rapidly. The rapid work cycle instantly depletes the attacker's blood sugar by converting it to lactic acid. In short, the attacker is unable to produce energy for its muscles and the attackers body is unable to function properly. When the attacker's neuromuscular system is overwhelmed and controled by the stun gun, the attacker loses balance.

By the way, if the attacker should be touching you at the time, the current will not pass to your body.

The unique feature that Taser came up with, not having to reload after only one shot, is great for law enforcement personnel. The stun gun can release one shot or up to three shots before having to reload. You still can use only one shot and reload if that's all that's needed.

Personal Keychain Alarm With Light

By Adam Sisterhen

In this article I will be reviewing the personal keychain alarm with light. I will cover features, effectiveness, and whom it is best suited for. Not all personal alarms are created equal.

Features:

· The keychain is like any other keychain that holds keys; the interesting part about this one is your keys are attached to a box about the size of a car remote lock with a panic button and light.

· The alarm has 2 function modes; a light press on the panic button emits a loud warning chip; depress the button completely and it emits a 118 decibel alarm that stays on until you depress the button again. 118 decibels is equivalent to a jet plane take off at 100 yards.

· The light works well to find the keyhole on your car door or entry door in the dark or to find something dropped in the movie theater.

Effectiveness:

· To test the effectiveness I went to several different locations; all were public areas like outdoor markets, parks and shopping malls; parking lots & parking garages; strip mall stores and restaurants. And yes I did have some confrontations with security personnel and store managers.

· Outdoor markets, parks and shopping malls; Most people were not interested in doing anything except moving on their way quickly. What a shock in today's times. However people did take notice, approximately 55% and of those at least one person asked if I needed help at each location.

· Parking lots & parking garages; 35% of people in the general area looked in my direction. One out of the 5 places I tested asked if I needed help.

· Strip mall stores and restaurants; 90% of people turned to see what was going on. I attribute that to fewer people thinking somebody else will help and in a small space you want to know what's going on that might affect you.

· To summarize Effectiveness: at all locations people took notice, some asked if I need help. Now would they have engaged if I was under attack? I don't know? I would like to thanks so. I did find that at indoor locations the response was better than that of outdoor locations. I'm sure the alarm is more audible indoors contributing to those results. I think over all the Keychain alarm with light was effective in getting the attention of those around, and I would consider it a success personal security and self defense product.

Best suited for:

· Mom and Dad: The alarm is perfect for kids (with proper training, like not crying wolf). Suppose you were shopping with your child and for one instance you took your eye off them; that is all the longer it would take for them to be taken. However if they had the alarm they could push the panic button alerting you of their location and others around possible even scaring off the abductor.

· Grandma and Grandpa: for the same reasons as above as well as their own safety. Not only for muggers but if they fall and need help getting to their feet.

In Summary: The keychain alarm with light is small, light weight, easy to carry and an effective way to bring attention to yourself in your time of need. In today's Market place the keychain alarm with light is a effective product for the size, functions and cost. Remember the best time to learn your lesson about personal security and self defense is before something happens.

Women's Self Defense Training the Be Series - Be Physically Trained

Women's Self Defense Training the Be Series - Be Physically Trained By Adam Sisterhen

Rule #2: Be physically trained (participating in a self defense class/>the act, process, of imparting knowledge and skill): Physical training gives you the tools to maintain your personal security and is the single best way to be prepared. Why should you train in self defense? What are the benefits of self defense training?

Why should you train in self defense?

· Preparation: With any crime, the best way to avoid it is to be prepared. Self defense training is defense preparation. Good self defense training can prepare you to deal with an assault, robbery, attempted rape, not to mention the everlasting emotional effects of an attack.

· Insurance: You purchase house, auto, fire, and even life insurance to protect you and your family. What do you do to insure you personal safety? Self defense training is the insurance you need for your personal security against being a victim of crime.

· Crime: Generation after generation, laws have been passed and law enforcement has increased in numbers and still hasn't been able to eliminate crime. Crime is here to stay; you can't change that; however you can reduce the risks of being a victim.

· Statistics: University studies show women who don't fight back more often lose in an assault. In fact 73% of all women 12 years old and up will become victims, with a third being robbed, assaulted, or raped. Unfortunately just being born a woman puts you at risk for certain crimes.

· Self Reliance: In today's world people often look the other way rather than getting involved; you can't rely on someone coming to your rescue.

· Knowledge: Learn what to look for, know how to avoid those threatening situations, and take steps to learn best possible methods to defend yourself is key to survival and escape from your enemy. That knowledge can be the difference between life and death.

What are the benefits of self defense training?

· Building Self Confidence: Being self confident helps you in every aspect of life. It empowers you to take control and be a stronger person. For example, offenders look for timid and weak targets, then walking tall and with confidence increases the odds in your favor.

· Peace of mind: Peace of mind comes from knowing that you have the proper training to defend yourself should the time come for you to use that training for defense.

· Physical Fitness: Training improves your balance, strength, stamina, flexibility, and posture, increasing your overall health.

· Stress relief: Stress is one of the number one causes of illness; through physical and mental conditioning you reduce your stress levels. Exercise improves circulation and increases your oxygen delivery while reducing anxiety.

Can You Use a Cell Phone As a Self Defense Product?

By Jack Krohn

Picture this: using your cell phone for self defense! What I visualize is using it to call 911, trying to beat someone over the head or throwing it at an assailant. Not a very good self defense weapon! In real life a list of self defense products would include items that look like cell phones but that could play a role in defending yourself like a cell phone disguised as a stun gun.

A cell phone stun gun gives you an edge usually reserved to the assailant-that of surprise. Assailants use surprise to their advantage all the time to get the upper hand. Not one in a hundred people would recognize or suspect you are carrying a non lethal weapon when you have a cell phone stun gun or a camera cell phone stun gun.

Just imagine the bad guy has you in a choke hold. You reach into your purse or pocket, grab your stun weapon, apply it to his rib cage and press the trigger. In three to five seconds the 950,000 volts immobilizes him by forcing his muscles to work so fast he has no energy left.

The complete process takes only a few seconds. It can immobilize a person for up to 5-10 minutes. The results of being zapped with a stun gun are comparable to running a 40km marathon; the attacker just does not have any energy left.

It also interrupts the microscopic neurological stimulus that controls muscle movement. The results are disorientation and loss of balance. It is for this reason that this stun device gives you plenty of time to get away.

Just the sight of a stun gun is often enough to cause a would-be attacker to back off. Stun guns come in many sizes and with different voltages. Take some time to learn about stun guns - how they work and how they should be used.

Stun guns, tasers and pepper sprays are not legal in some states. Check with your local police department first before you get one.

Stun Guns - 5 Most Shocking Myths

By Steve M Johnson

Stun guns have been around for many years, yet most people either don't know exactly what they are or how to operate them effectively. Even worse, there are some pretty shocking myths about them. Here are 5 of the most common myths.

They Are Deadly.
This is simply not true, stun guns do not rely on pain for results, and they use a high voltage charge, which temporarily disables an attackers muscular function and motor skills for a short period of time, usually a few minutes. Since they use low amperage the effects are not deadly or permanent. Remember it is the amps that kill not the volts.

They Are Illegal.
Stun guns are legal to carry and possess in almost every city and state in America, however there are some areas where they are not legal to own or possess. Please check all applicable state and city laws before purchasing any self defense product.

They Will Shock You If You Are Touching An Attacker.
No matter how powerful or effective a stun gun is the possibility of the user being stunned while stunning an attacker is zero. The current simply will not pass through an attacker and into a user.

Stun Guns And Tasers Are The Same Thing.
This is probably the biggest myth. This is how the two differ; a stun gun must be physically pressed against an attacker to deliver a shock. A taser deploys two barbed prongs attached to a length of wire and can be discharged up to 15 feet away. This means a user does not have to physically touch an attacker with the taser.

Stun Guns Are All The Same.
Stun guns come in many different voltage levels, shapes, sizes even colors. With so many choices available anyone can find one to suit their needs or personal preference, they are even avaliable disguised as a cell phone or flashlight.

4 Self Defense Weapon Reviews - Get Tips, Facts and Advice on These Tools!
By Steve Gib

Are you looking to wield self defense weapons without worrying about how your attacker feels? You might want to be able to hide the weapons on your body or your vehicle and possibly in your house.

You will learn the laws surrounding the use of certain self defence weapons in this informative article.

Self defense weapon review, tips & advice #1 - Knife or any weapon with a serrated edge - A person that utilizes this weapon wants to stab a potential attacker but does not want to freeze up with the thought of committing this act. Aside from a potential jail sentence from attacking someone with a deadly weapon the assailant could be killed in the process.

Self defense weapons review, tips & advice #2 - Debilitating an attacker with pepper spray - Pepper spray will cause great irritation to your mouth, nose and throat mucous membranes. Other effects are labored breathing and for your eyes to feel like they are on fire. This tool can incapacitate an attacker for up to twenty minutes. With such a tiny can of pepper spray it is easily hidden and can shoot an attacker from six feet away.

Self defence weapons review, tips & advice #3 - The ruthless Baton of Steel - Keeping a simple but effective and brutal weapon such as the steel baton near your bed is something I advise due to its ability to expand up to three feet.

Self defence weapon review, tips & advice #4 - The shocking Tazer gun - Tazers are made in several styles including close combat and gun style which have the ability to release hooks filled with surging electricity that latch on to the body of any attacker. The aggressor will be frozen in severe pain for several minutes or less. My personal favorite is pepper spray as it can have a much longer result.

Guns Vs Stun Guns - What New Consumers Should Know

By D. M. Fehrenbacher

If you are researching personal safety devices, chances are you have had a debate with yourself weighing the pros and cons of guns versus stun guns. These two very different pieces of equipment offer different advantages that could mean life or death to your and your family. Read on for a list of advantages and disadvantages that just might make this purchase a little easier for you.

1. Ease of Use. Guns require a lot of practice to master. Some people go their whole lives never making a good shot. Guns require practice to shoot effectively, and the nerves involved in a scary situation might be just enough to ruin even the best aim. Stun guns are much broader in their use. You don't have to worry about aim because you are holding it to the skin of another person, and any skin will work.

2. Dead vs. Stunned. Guns carry a much, much higher kill rate than stun guns. Stun guns are designed to interfere with the body's electrical system. A high voltage charge is delivered that interrupts other signals and leaves the attacker unable to move for up to ten minutes. Realistically, most people recover in just a few minutes, which is still ample time to make your escape. Guns shot well kill people, and with poor aim do nothing but let your attacker know you don't know how to use the gun you are waving around. Without proper training, a gun is simply a green light for an intruder. A stun gun is much easier to use, and therefore more likely to be effective at stopping an intruder.

3. Accidental Firing. Stun guns and real guns both offer various safety features, but evidence of the insufficiency of these measures can be seen in the news every day. Accidental shootings take down children and adults alike. Simply dropping a gun can emit a potentially lethal discharge, where a stun gun is much more difficult to accidentally use. Even in the case of accidentally using a stun gun, the results are rarely ever fatal and never permanent.

4. Tools For Attackers. The worst case scenario for anyone trying to defend themselves from an intruder is being overpowered by the intruder. Intruders who come face to face with a gun will often assume you don't know how to use it. They will sense any fear or hesitation you have and will grab that gun from you. Then, your burglar just became armed. A stun gun is easier to conceal, and even if the worst case occurs, won't kill you. A robber who intends to use your protection against you can't shoot you dead with a stun gun.

5. More availability. Families with small children should keep all guns locked away. Children are notoriously curious about guns and have learned from violent cartoons that they are funny and cool. Children are less likely to understand what a stun gun is and be attracted to it. Stun guns are much safer to keep in bedside drawers than real guns.

The point of purchasing a self-protection item is to keep you safer. Why purchase an item that just increases the chances you or a loved one might get hurt. Stun guns offer protection without the very real risks of guns.

New Trends in Security Technology

By D. M. Fehrenbacher

Security technology changes all of the time to keep up with the fast paced changes in technology as a whole. To stay safe and keep your family protected, you should keep abreast of changes in this ever-evolving industry. These trends in the industry represent the latest advances in protection and all of the ways you can keep yourself and your things safe.

1. Size Matters. Size matters in security technology, but the proportions are likely different than those you might think. The smaller the better. Entire alarm systems can be housed in small containers and out of site of potential intruders. Stun guns and pepper sprays can be found as small as pens and pagers. The small packaging makes these items easier to conceal and affords you an element of surprise than can be crucial in the event of a break-in.

2. Disguises Add Surprise. Disguises add an element of surprise that is essential in keeping yourself safe. Stun guns disguised as cell phones can take a potential attacker by surprise and they might never think to try and get the stun gun out of your hands. Pepper spray in a pager takes an attacker completely by surprise and can give you the extra time you need to make a safe exit and get help. Even security cameras are better disguised now, hiding in clocks and pencil holders, and catching the face of your robber on camera for easier identification and prosecution.

3. Networking. Networking your alarm system allows you access to help at only a moment's notice. You alarm can simply connect in seconds to the master system of the alarm company and trigger calls for ambulance, fire, or police help much faster than you could using a telephone. Each alarm point is connected to the greater system, and even the driveway and exterior cameras can be networked in creating the most thorough picture of your personal safety possible.

These trends represent the direction the industry is going. Safety devices that are bulky and draw attention are gone. They don't do anyone any favors. Stand alone alarm devices are for yesterday's houses. Today, things are digital, they are connected, and they are small enough to afford you the upper hand of surprise.

Not Your Mama's Stun Gun - Innovations in Stun Gun Technology

By D. M. Fehrenbacher

When you think of a stun gun, you might picture angry looking contraption emitting angry looking electrical pulses and sizzling the very air around it. Movies and spy shows on television depict these personal safety devices often as brutal and severe, items to be wielded around like batons against karate chopping opponents. In reality, the stun gun has evolved into an understated piece of equipment with some surprising advantages that make it user friendly to even the most timid person.

The first overwhelming advantage of the newest stun guns is their increased functionality. Most now also operate as flashlights. This duality makes a lot of sense. Most robberies and muggings occur in poorly-lit areas. Your first line of protection with a stun gun should be a light to better assess your surroundings and your assailant.

The second advantage to many of the more high tech varieties, such as many of the Street Wise stun guns, is an ear-splitting alarm. Just as many car alarms emit loud noise to draw attention to would-be robbers, your own personal alarm can help deter violence by loudly letting everyone around you know that you are in trouble. These audible alarms register around 130 decibels and will leave a lasting impression on anyone around.

If lights and sirens aren't enough to scare away a mugger, you can use your gun with more confidence thanks to the third advantage of a disable pin. This security mechanism ensures that no one can forcefully take your weapon from you and use it against you. Simply slip the wristband attached to the stun gun around your wrist as you are getting it from your pocket or purse. A disable pin is attached to the wristband as well as the gun. If someone tries to take the gun from you, perhaps to use against you, the disable pin will become dislodged and the gun will not fire. This protects you in the event that you lose control of the situation.

A fourth advantage to the newest class of stun guns is the variability in disguises available. You might prefer a traditional black stun gun with a holster. You might also prefer a bright pink stun gun to reflect your sense of personal style. The cell phone stun guns provide all of the power of a standard weapon in the package of a faux-cell phone. You can take this fake phone from your purse in a dark parking lot and anyone watching will not know you have just armed yourself. For a more subtle approach, consider the pen stun gun. These super small weapons pack a punch in the size and shape of a writing pen for optimum discretion.

With increased functionality, self-protection and new disguises, the stun gun of yesterday is long gone. You can invest in these self protection devices with the confidence of knowing you are both safe and discreet. Features vary some by model, allowing you to customize your weapon to be the very best weapon for you.

Keeping the Element of Surprise - 4 Easily Hidden Tools to Protect Yourself

By D. M. Fehrenbacher

The obvious presence of security measures is sometimes more than enough to keep away burglars or troublesome intruders. Strategically placed stickers advertising your alarm system or a loudly barking dog both let would-be criminals know that your home is not open for their particular brand of trouble.

These deterrents, however, will not work on everyone who means to burglarize your home. Particularly motivated thieves will find ways into your home, so some well placed tools can be helpful to ensure your ultimate protection. The following list contains the top four security products currently available that may not look like much, but certainly make up for it in functionality.

1. Diversion Safes. Diversion safes provide a safe place to keep valuables and cash with attracting attention the way a conventional safe does. At first glance, these items do not advertise your valuables at all. Quite the opposite, these devices often take the shape of common household products such as coke bottles, candles, or cleaning supplies. For your valuables and emergency stash of cash, consider a diversion safe to keep all of these items together and out of the view of potential robbers.

2. Cigarette Hidden Camera. While your lungs benefit from hiding away that old pack of emergency cigarettes, your home could benefit from keep the empty pack around. Spy cameras small enough to fit in empty cigarette packs offer the perfect protection without attracting attention like conventional cameras often do. These small cameras offer high quality color monitoring without the expense and extensive installation of cameras around the house.

3. Life Pager Pepper Spray. While pagers aren't the most technologically advanced innovation our generation can claim, they offer many opportunities for improvement. One adaptation of the pager is the life pager pepper spray. This pepper spray solution can protect you from the advances of a bad guy and offers the advantage of surprise. The pager looks nothing like a conventional pepper spray can, but contains enough solution to see you through a scuffle and allow you an opportunity to get away and call for help.

4. Stun Gun Cell Phone Look-A-Like. The stun gun cell phone look-a-like offers the advantage of surprise on your unsuspecting victim. If you feel unsafe or unsure of your environment, you can stealthily remove this tool from your purse of brief case and know that you can protect yourself should someone approach you. Offered in different colors and makes of phone, you are sure to find a cell phone look-a-like that looks enough like your own phone to provide you with complete disuise.

While some people and businesses prefer to use dummy cameras to give the allusion of protection, still other prefer to keep some of their best tools hidden. This increases the surprise factor - an often necessary tool that can help you immeasurably when you try and protect yourself from someone who means your harm.

5 Ways to Get Away From a Physical Or Verbal Attack

By Richard Armen

To remove yourself from a dangerous situation that hasn't yet turned violent, you have five possible responses. There's compliance, or doing what the bad guy wants. This does not always ensure your safety; especially if your attacker has a weapon, they have no reason to let you go afterwords. Escape is always the best choice, if it's available. De-escalation means talking your attacker down from the situation. This requires you to remain very calm and level-headed, something that will be difficult in this situation. Assertiveness is another choice; use your body language, tone, and voice to make the attacker realize that you're not a good target. This is not always effective at stopping them. Your last resort is fighting back physically, which does carry a bigger risk of personal harm. Of course, you can always use a combination of these strategies to get away safely.

If you find yourself in a verbal altercation, the best thing to do is not to fight back, but to de-escalate the situation and resolve the conflict. If you know the person who's trying to pick a fight with you, figure out what they want, and try to appease them calmly. Do your best not to get into a shouting match with someone who is angry, as this can escalate quickly. Speak softly and avoid provoking them. If you don't have to get involved with them, simply walk away.

When it comes to self defense, it is only acceptable to protect yourself using physical force if the perpetrator is attacking you physically, or has made verbal statements to the effect that a physical attack is imminent. Once such a situation has evolved into a physical altercation, there's not much you can do but fight back. If you can get away safely without having to get into a physical fight, this is your best chance. Otherwise, use pepper spray, a stun gun, or a similar device that you are carrying. If you have no such device, you'll have to fight back physically using only your body, which puts you at a great disadvantage.

If you find yourself in a relatively normal situation but soon become aware that something bad is about to happen, you have a few choices, but you must act quickly. Let's say you're on a date, and your date begins acting creepy. You're afraid of a sexual assault or other form of violence. The minute you become aware of the situation, make sure that you look as confident as possible. Your potential attacker may still be trying to size you up, and you don't want to act like a vulnerable target. If you're aware of a possible attack, do everything you can to get out of the situation. Pretend that you are getting a phone call, and excuse yourself to answer it. Simply walk the other direction. Escape from the situation as quickly as possible.

This is a situation where a pepper spray pen is a great device. You can pull it out under a guise of writing your phone number or another piece of information. Then, before he can react, your would-be attacker gets a shot of pepper spray to the face. The pepper spray pen is perfect when violence is imminent, but the attack hasn't started yet. Although fighting back is usually the least desirable response to an imminent attack, when you are armed with pepper spray and no means for escape is possible, it may be the best choice.

When faced with a potentially violent situation, your goal is to make it out unscathed. Do not engage the person unless you must, and even then, try to escape using words rather than violence. If the confrontation does turn violent, use pepper spray or a stun gun to get yourself out safely.

A Few Facts About Pepper Spray

By William M Ward

Are you looking for protection from intruders or animals? Would you like to know a little more about how pepper spray can be beneficial? Here are a few good things to know about this tool.

You have heard of pepper spray, right? It is simply the best form of protection that is non-lethal to the offender. When used, it will temporarily blind the attacker for sometimes up to an hour. This gives you a chance to get out of danger, and it works against most animals as well. It is widely available from specialized stores and online.

The potency of this protective aerosol comes from the chemical known as Oleoresin Capsicum. It is derived directly from cayenne peppers. When it comes in contact with a membrane, the capillaries will dilate and cause problems like loss of vision, pain, and trouble breathing. It burns when it touches the skin. However, the effects are short lived and offer no long-term damage.

You may wonder how to use your canister when you get it. To start with, only use if completely necessary. Stand far enough away to stay out of danger and aim for the face of the attacker. Hold the nozzle for about two seconds and then move out of the way. After a couple of seconds you will see their reaction and know if another shot is needed. Once they are down, escape and call authorities.

Did you know that pepper spray works on animals as well? Wild or domestic, they are both equally vulnerable. It has the same effects it does on a human target. It is just as painful and frightening for them. It can stop an attack or even keep one from happening. It's a great thing for those who live and hike around bears or big cats. Postal carriers keep this for use against aggressive dogs. It could very well save your life.

Should you accidentally get spray on yourself, you should know it is not dispelled easily. Try flushing your eyes immediately as best you can. Use milk, honey, and baking soda will take a bit of the sting out of your hands and face. You can also give washing your hands in alcohol multiple times a shot. For the most part, you will actually have to just wait for your body to get rid of it on its own.

Here are a few more things you need to know about OC. First of all, it is not legal in every state and certain restrictions do apply. Make sure you check locally before you carry it. Never have this on your person in an airport or plane unless you want to be charged with a federal crime. It also expires and loses potency. To always be sure of the best results when you need them, buy a new canister every three or four years.

Pepper spray is very effective in delivering a strong punch. It is a wonderful deterrent for both humans and animals. If you want a great means of non-lethal protection, look no further.

Questions Regarding Self Defense Legalities?

By Bryan Hough

Do you know your rights when it comes to self defense? There are many misconceptions about the concept of self defense. One of the most prevalent of these is that if you fight back against an attacker, you will be charged with a crime. In actuality, as long as you use a legal self defense method and do not use excessive force, it is perfectly legal to defend yourself.

If you are faced with a confrontation, your best course of action is to avoid physical confrontations, if possible. Do not use your pepper spray for self defense unless you don't feel comfortable running away from the situation or otherwise removing yourself from it. Mitigate the situation, and do not respond to verbal assaults unless you feel they're likely to turn physical. It is always better to avoid an attack than to have to fight back. Plus, the courts will consider whether you were a willing participant, or whether you were attacked. Do not start the violence out of choice. If you do need to use physical force, avoid lethal injuries.

If you do need to fight back using your self defense device, do not worry about ending up in jail for protecting yourself. Pepper spray makes a great choice as a personal protection product because it causes no lasting harm, so you need not worry about an injured assailant trying to get you in trouble. The courts have repeatedly found pepper spray to be "reasonable force" when being attacked. Reasonable force is usually defined as the amount of force a reasonable person would use, given the situation. You are allowed to physically defend yourself during an attack as long as your defense does not go beyond reasonable force. As soon as your attacker is down, get away from the situation. If you continue to use force once it's no longer perceived as necessary, this is when you could be held liable.

When buying pepper spray or any other self defense device, be sure that you know the applicable laws in your area. While pepper spray is legal across the country, some states or cities place restrictions on purchasing or carrying such devices. For example, some areas only allow pepper spray sales through licensed firearms dealers or online. In addition, a few areas require a permit or having to take a class before owning pepper spray. In nearly every case, carrying pepper spray comes under fewer restrictions than carrying a taser device, a gun, or any other weapon to protect yourself. Once you own the self defense device, never use it unless there is an immediate threat.

To determine the rules regarding self defense products where you live, call your local police station. When considering your methods and strategies for self defense, be sure that you find out the exact laws in your state; so that you know what you can legally do while still remaining on the right side of the law.

Stun Batons - More Effective Than a Baseball Bat?

By Steve M Johnson

A stun baton is only one of the many self defense products available today, However they offer many advantages over traditional stun guns.

Distance.

The two most popular types of stun batons are the 16" model and the 20" model. An extra 16 to 20 inches allows you to keep your distance from an attacker. Most stun batons are energized the entire length of the baton, shocking an attacker if they try to take it away from you.

Stopping Power.

Most stun batons pack between 300,000 to 500,000 volts of stopping power. Three to five seconds of contact with a stun baton will leave an attacker dazed, confused, and unable to control their muscles, giving you valuable time to escape an attack.

Draws Attention.

The loud arcing sound the stun baton makes when discharged will draw attention to an attack. If that doesn't do the trick, some are also equipped with a loud personal alarm and/or a flashlight mounted on the base allowing you to illuminate an attacker and their surroundings. The flashlight will also allow you to signal for help.

Versatile.

Because of their extended reach and stopping power, they are a popular self defense products among police officers and security guards. Stun batons are an effective tool for crowd control and defending your self against multiple attackers. Stun batons are an effective non lethal tool for self defense in the home. Just the sight and sound of a stun baton is enough to send most attackers running scared, if they are foolish enough to press their luck they will get the shock of a lifetime.

Why You Can't Rely on Self-Defense Weapons

By Harv Simpson

When I was in college, my now wife was attacked in a parking garage. She was approached by a man who, after multiple warnings, continued to come after her. She had a can of pepper spray I bought for her in her purse, thank God, and managed to escape shaken but unharmed.

She was lucky, but if you're thinking of relying solely on your pepper spray or stun gun to keep you safe, your story may not end so happily.

My wife was lucky because she recognized the threat before her attacker got too close. She warned him a long way off, giving herself enough time to grab her pepper spray and prepare to fire it. Like I said, she was lucky. Most women don't have the luxury of that kind of time.

Not only is it rare that you'll be given enough warning to react, but many states actually ban certain self defense items, making it illegal to protect yourself.

This is exactly why everyone - men, women and children alike - need to learn hand-to-hand self defense combat. Knowing how to handle yourself in a physical confrontation gives you the confidence to react at a moments notice and keep yourself safe. You get to take your safety into your own capable hands and not have to rely on some gadget that may or may not work properly when you need it to.

It isn't necessary to study for years to become the next Bruce Lee, but it is necessary to know the basic moves that can protect you from an attacker. After my wife's attack and a similar incident of my own, I started gathering any knowledge I could on how to defend myself. It took years to gather it all, but I learned many great lessons.

You don't need to be a black belt to keep yourself and your loved ones safe and you don't have to train for years. You simply need to know the proper way to stop a fight and show your courage without some barely legal piece of equipment.

Pepper spray and stun guns are useful I recommend that everyone invest in them, but don't stop there. If you really want to guarantee the safety of both you and your family in any situation you need to learn the secrets to self defense.

What is Pepper Spray?

By Steven Phoenix

Pepper Spray is a self-defense tool made up of oleoresin capsicum, which is derived from the chile pepper. It comes in many forms, such as aerosol spray, fog, foam, or gel. It is also available in very discrete carrying forms, such as the stunning ring, pepper pen, or pepper pager. Unlike most forms of self-defense, pepper spray does not actually injure the person or creature that you are defending yourself from, but rather renders them immobile with pain. You can use pepper spray on another human or an animal as it is effective with both. This is what makes it so reliable. Have you ever tried to use martial arts on a bear? It tends to end badly.

Pepper spray works by inflaming the mucus membranes of the attacker and causing the eyes to tear up, and it also makes it hard for the attacker to breathe. This reaction lasts about 30 minutes; long enough for the person who is being attacked to escape and/or get help. Unlike other forms of self defense, pepper spray has no permanent lasting effects on the person who has been sprayed.

Aerosol spray cans are the most popular form of pepper spray. This is because it is convenient to clip on to a purse or wallet or set of keys. The down sides of aerosol sprays are that aerosol tends not to travel as far as streams, foam or gel. Also if it is a windy day, there's a good chance the wind could carry your spray in the wrong direction.

If you don't want the chance of the wind blowing it off your target, your best bet would be to purchase pepper foam or gel. It's not as convenient as aerosol in the fact that it takes a few seconds longer to affect your attacker's mucus membrane, but it is more accurate and it also shoots further because it is heavier. With aerosol it is more of a mist. The foam and gel are more solid and stick together, making it harder to get off the face of the attacker. Pepper foams and gels sometimes come with UV dye in them as well, which makes it easier for law enforcement to capture the attacker.

Personal Keychain Alarm

By M. E. Russell

If you're anything like my wife, you will travel five miles out of your way just to get around a stray dog. My wife loves to walk but her paths are always altered when she encounters a dog. Well, many people in the world today happen to be quite frightened of dogs; I'm just not one of them. Well, I guess if it's big, vicious and mean enough; oh and loose - maybe. I guess then I would choose the extra five miles out the way.

I got good news though. I bought my wife a Personal Keychain Alarm and she loves it. It fits on your keychain, has a light for when it gets dark, and another button that sounds off the most annoying alarm noise, I've ever heard. It has a 130db personal alarm in it. Another option it has is; there's a pin that connects the alarm unit to your keychain and if this is pulled out that same annoying sound becomes continuous until the pin is placed back into the hole.

This Personal Alarm with Flashlight does not only scare the stray dogs away but also anyone who may try to get in your way. You know what this alarm sounds like; it sounds like a professional alarm system that's linked to the police force, swat team, or some response unit.

It's almost like having your own personal emergency alarm system in the palm of your hand. No one will stick around while this alarm is going off; you can believe that.

Me and my wife take are walks and it seems now; we never deviate from the planned trail. Of course, she has me to protect her but that didn't matter; she would still take another route. Now that she carries this Personal Keychain Alarm, she has become superwoman; able to go down any neighborhood street in a single stroll.

Sometimes my wife may be a little too quick on the draw. She will reach for her Personal Panic Alarm thinking she saw a dog, or when she hears shuffling feet going through the bushes; she gets ready.

Don't forget, this mechanism also has a shiny bright light, which my wife uses constantly coming home to find the right key to enter the house. She is very pleased with the Personal Keychain Alarm which makes me pleased also.

Stun Master Multi Function Stun Gun - Very Serious Self Defense

By Jack Krohn

There are literally thousands of self defense products on the market today from stun guns, personal alarms, pepper spray and more. This new multi function stun gun may very well be the best of them all. To be honest price should be your last consideration when choosing a stun gun. After all we are talking about your self defense here-your life.

As with all self defense products they are only meant to allow you enough time to get away from a dangerous situation and seek help. They are not meant to injure or maim anyone. This self defense weapon has the best features from several earlier models all rolled into one. First of all it is the most powerful stun gun in the market at 2.7 million volts-enough to fry anyone's butt that would do you harm. It is rechargeable too which over the course of a lifetime will save you money.

And speaking of lifetime, did I mention this and all Stun Master stun guns have lifetime warranties? How strong is that?

The most popular feature for many in a stun gun is the alarm with disable pin wrist strap. If an assailant tries to take the stun gun from you an alarm goes off and the stun gun is disabled. The pin is disconnected from the gun making it impossible to use against you. Consumers love this feature.

It is a very small 4.75" x 2.5" x 1" and comes with free nylon holster. It has a super bright LED flashlight and a red flashing emergency light too.

My guess is this new self defense products will set the standard for years to come on price and features that quite frankly are unmatched in the business of self defense.

If you are in the market for a self defense product look for quality, effectiveness, and a biggie-LEGALITY. Stun guns are not legal in some states. Check with your local police department first before you get one.

The Difference Between Mace and Pepper Spray to Defend Your Castle

By Patrice Vecchio

Mace® is a brand name (as Pepsi is for soda or pop) for an assortment of several different variations of self defense sprays manufactured by MACE Security International. The most common form of Mace® is a tear-gas like spray based on the synthetic chemicals orthochlorobenzalmalononitrile (CS) and choroacetophenone (CN) which can also be enhanced with an identification dye - good for criminal incrimination. It may also be combined with pepper spray. It causes is a painful stinging sensation of the assailant's eyes, skin, and any part of the body exposed to the spray. It will overwhelm and disorient the person temporarily. It is the ideal tool for law enforcement when dispersing crowds of people in mob situations because it does not render someone physically immobile. However, it is INEFFECTIVE against a psychotic or a person under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol who is impervious to pain.

While anyone who has been sprayed in the face with a self defense product might say they have be "Maced", the truth is that only a small percentage of personal self defense products are called Mace®. Pepper Spray is the more general term for these self defense sprays. It is based of the use of a cayenne pepper extract called capsaicin which is combined with a carrier agent that the extract is dissolved in and a propellant that allows the solution to be sprayed in the assailant's face. When someone is hit in the face with a stream of pepper spray, the mucus membranes of the throat, sinuses, and eyes become physically inflamed, and they temporarily loose the ability to see. Their breathing ability is reduced to all but life critical levels. The attacker becomes immobile for a short period of time that will wear off within one hour. This is very EFFECTIVE against EVERYONE whether they feel pain or not.

Solutions of pepper spray vary from 1-15% and apply differently to various self defense situations. The lower concentrations act more quickly on the body and wear off after 10 to 15 minutes. This is ideal for law enforcement and police in crowd control. The higher the concentration, the longer the effects will last giving you more time to get away from your attacker.

Pepper Spray comes in many forms from a half-ounce key chain model that fits easily into a purse to disguised models in the form of pens, pagers, and lipstick tubes. A larger 4 ounce canister can be kept by your bedside so you can "defend your castle" at any hour of the day or night.

Unarmed Self Defense Moves

By James R Shaw

If you find yourself caught without pepper spray, a stun gun, or any other self defense device, you'll have to resort to unarmed self defense moves. While this should never be done if you have a better alternative, unfortunately violence does happen, and it can catch you off guard. If it happens to you, you should know how to fight back even if you have no form of weapon handy.

Most people think they will simply escape and run away if someone attacks them. This is almost always impossible. In many cases the attacker will already have you in their grip before you realize what's happening. If the attacker has a knife or gun, they can seriously injure or even kill you as you're trying to run away from them. You'll have to incapacitate them before you can escape, either with an effective self defense device or by physically forcing them to let you go.

When you aren't carrying a self defense device, you should be aware of everyday objects that could be used as weapons if the need arises. Pens or other sharp objects, as well as your car and house keys, can be used to jab an attacker, particularly in the eyes. When trying to fight back against an assailant when you don't have a weapon, your entire body should be viewed as a weapon. Aim for sensitive areas such as the face and groin; your efforts will do more damage there than when aimed at their stomach, chest, back, or extremities.

Use punches and kicks aimed at getting your attacker to loosen his hold on you. Particular targets include the neck, eyes, and temple. Be careful with kicks; many people think that they kick more effectively than they actually do, and if you do not kick correctly the attacker could grab your leg, pulling you to the ground. Plus, most people are faster with their arms than they are with their legs, although kneeing the attacker can be a good strategy. When punching, aim for the face, eyes, and neck.
